A forgotten pattern or PIN code instantly locks the screen of an Android smartphone, making it impossible to enter a new password even with full network support, and the absence of a SIM card completely disables the standard recovery path through SMS messages.
You do not have to take the gadget to a service center and pay money for a simple procedure. There are a number of software and hardware methods that allow you to bypass screen protection. The choice of a specific method directly depends on the version of the operating system, the model of your smartphone and whether certain debugging or synchronization functions were enabled in advance.
Before taking active steps, it is important to understand one thing: most effective methods will lead to the complete deletion of user data. If you didn't back up to the cloud, photos and contacts may be lost. However, restoring the device's functionality is often a priority over losing files.
Using the Google Find My Device service
The most civilized and safest way to regain control of your phone is to use an official tool from Google. This method only works if the locked device is logged in Google account, the Internet is turned on (via Wi-Fi) and the geolocation function is activated. A SIM card is not required here, since data transfer occurs via a wireless network.
You will need any other device with Internet access: a computer, tablet or a friend’s phone. Go to the official website of the device management service. After authorization using the same login as on the locked phone, you will see a list of your gadgets on the map or in the list.
Select the desired device from the proposed list. The interface will offer you three main actions: play sound, lock the device or erase data. We are interested in the cleaning function, which will delete all data, including a forgotten screen lock password.
⚠️ Attention: After executing the “Clear” command, the phone will return to factory settings. All photos, applications and messages not saved in the cloud will be permanently deleted.
The deletion process takes several minutes depending on the connection speed. Once the operation is completed, the phone will reboot. When you turn it on for the first time, you will need to enter your Google account information to confirm ownership (FRP protection), after which you can set a new lock password.
Make sure that the locked phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, otherwise the reset command will not be delivered to the device.
Reset via Recovery mode (Hard Reset)
If the Internet is on the phone is missing or you don’t remember your Google account information, the engineering recovery menu, known as Recovery Mode, comes to the rescue. This mode is built into the firmware of every Android smartphone and allows you to perform system operations regardless of the state of the main interface.
This menu is entered by using a combination of physical buttons. As phone models vary, combinations may vary. Most often, you need to hold down the volume up button and the power button at the same time. On some models Samsung you may need to connect the USB cable to the computer while pressing the buttons.
After the manufacturer's logo appears, release the power button, but continue to hold the volume key until a menu with text in English appears. Navigation in this menu is carried out using the volume buttons, and selecting an item using the power button.
- 🔍 Find the item
Wipe data/factory resetand select it. - 🔍 Confirm the action by selecting
YesorFactory data reset. - 🔍 Wait for the data partition formatting process to complete.
- 🔍 Select
Reboot system nowto reboot.
After rebooting, the phone will look like you just took it out of the box. You will have to go through the initial setup again. The system may request confirmation of the owner through the old Google account - this is a standard security measure against theft.
☑️ Preparing for Hard Reset
Unlocking via the ADB command (for advanced users)
This method is only suitable for those users who had USB Debugging enabled in the developer menu before blocking. If this feature has been activated, you can delete the lock key file directly through your computer while preserving all personal data.
You will need to install the drivers for your phone and the tool package Android Debug Bridge (ADB) on your computer. Connect your locked smartphone to your PC via a USB cable. Open a command prompt on your computer in the folder where ADB tools are installed.
Enter the command to test the connection. If the phone trusts this computer (you previously clicked "Allow" on the phone screen), you will see the device's serial number in the list of connected gadgets.
adb devices
If the device is visible, enter a command to delete the file that stores the pattern or pin code. This command works on most versions of Android up to and including 11.
adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key
Or, if a digital password was used:
adb shell rm /data/system/password.key
After executing the command, restart the phone. You can try entering any password or simply swipe the screen and the lock should disappear. Immediately after logging in, it is recommended to set a new, strong passcode.
What to do if ADB does not see the phone?
If the `adb devices` command does not show the device, you may not have installed the drivers or debug mode was turned off before blocking. In this case, this method will not work, and you will have to use a reset via Recovery.
Features of unlocking Samsung smartphones
Owners of devices from the Korean giant are in a more advantageous position thanks to the service Find My Mobile. Unlike the standard Google solution, this service allows you to remotely unlock the screen without losing data if it was created and linked on the phone Samsung Account.
Go to the official Samsung support portal from any browser. Log in with your Samsung account. In the control menu, select your locked device.
Among the available options, find the “Unlock” button. The system will ask you to enter your Samsung account password again to confirm your identity. After this, the screen lock (pattern, PIN, fingerprint) will be removed remotely.
⚠️ Attention: The remote unlocking function without data loss only works if the “Remote control” option is previously enabled on the device in the Samsung security settings.
This method is the only chance to save photos and correspondence without using complex technical tricks. If a Samsung account was not created in advance, owners will have to resort to a standard reset via Recovery, as described in the previous sections.
| Method | Saving data | Requirements | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Find My Device | No | Internet, Google account | Low |
| Samsung Find My Mobile | Yes | Internet, Samsung account | Low |
| Hard Reset (Recovery) | No | Physical access to buttons | Medium |
| ADB Command | Yes | USB debugging enabled | High |
Samsung Find My Mobile service is the only way to unlock your phone without losing data, but it requires preliminary account setup.
Bypassing FRP protection (Google Account Verification)
After performing a Hard Reset, modern phones are faced with the FRP (Factory Reset Protection) security system. The phone will require you to enter the password for the Google account that was synchronized with the device before the reset. This is done so that a stolen phone cannot simply be reflashed and sold.
If you remember your Google username and password, there will be no problems. Just enter them during initial setup. However, users often forget exactly this data, trying to remember only the lock screen password.
Restoring access to your account is possible through any other browser or device. Go to the Google account recovery page. You may be prompted to answer security questions, send a code to a backup email, or confirm login via a notification on another trusted device.
It is important to understand that there is no legal “magic button” to completely disable FRP without account information. Various videos on the Internet that promise “bugs” for bypassing protection often stop working after Android security updates and may contain malware.
Prevention and creation of backup copies
The best way to deal with forgotten passwords is their correct organization and timely backup. Use password managers that store all your codes in encrypted form, accessible by master password or biometrics.
Check your synchronization settings regularly. Make sure your contacts, calendar, and photos are uploaded to the cloud. In Google settings, find the “Backup” section and make sure that the switch is active.
- 🔒 Write down your PIN code and pattern in a safe place, inaccessible to others.
- ☁️ Set up automatic photo uploading to Google Photos or the manufacturer's cloud storage.
- 📧 Add a backup email address and phone number to your Google account settings.
It is also recommended to check the functionality of the Find My Device function at least once a month. Try calling your phone from another device or sending a command to play sound to make sure that the connection with the server is established correctly.
⚠️ Attention: Menu interfaces and item names may vary slightly depending on the version of Android and the manufacturer’s shell (MIUI, OneUI, ColorOS). Always check the official documentation for your specific model.
Can I unlock my phone if I forgot both the screen password and my Google account password?
This is a difficult situation. You can reset the screen password through Hard Reset, but the phone will be locked at the account verification stage (FRP). You will have to restore access to your Google account through the recovery form on the Google website, using your backup email or phone. Without access to your account, you will not be able to legally log into your phone.
Will Hard Reset delete all files from the internal memory?
Yes, the operation Wipe data/factory reset completely clears the internal storage of the device. Photos, videos, installed applications and settings will be deleted. The data on the SD memory card may remain if you choose the option to format only the internal memory, but it is recommended to remove the card before resetting.
Will calling the phone help to unlock?
On older versions of Android (before 5.0) there was a bug that allowed you to get into the settings through the call menu. On modern versions of Android, this method does not work, since the security system has been significantly strengthened and isolated the call menu from system settings.
What is Safe Mode and will it help?
Safe Mode boots Android only with system applications, disabling all apps downloaded by the user. This may help if the screen lock was caused by a third-party virus application or a glitchy app. However, if you have forgotten the standard system password, safe mode will not help you remove it.
Do you need a SIM card to unlock through a Google account?
No, a SIM card is not required. The main condition is to have an active Internet connection via Wi-Fi. If the phone is not connected to the network, commands from the Google server will not reach the device, and unlocking will not occur.
