A forgotten PIN code instantly turns the smartphone into an inaccessible device, blocking access to calls, messages and personal data on the Android lock screen.
Fortunately, the operating system Android provides mechanisms for emergency recovery of access to device. The most radical, but also the most effective method is a full reset to factory settings. This process deletes all user data, including forgotten pattern, digital PIN or complex password, returning the phone to its out-of-the-box state.
It is important to understand that this method does not imply the recovery of forgotten data. Its goal is to restore functionality to the gadget itself. If your device has not been configured to synchronize with the cloud, photos and contacts may be lost forever. However, if the choice is between a brick in your pocket and a clean phone, the second option is obviously preferable for further use.
Preparing for the reset procedure and assessing the risks
Before taking active steps, you need to understand the consequences of a hard reset. The operation Factory Reset (factory reset) affects the entire internal storage of the device. This means that all applications that you installed after purchase will be deleted, along with their settings and cache.
Particular attention should be paid to media files. Photos taken with the camera, downloaded videos and music stored in the internal memory will be erased. If you have a memory card installed microSD, the data on it is usually saved, but it is better to play it safe and remove it before starting manipulations, if the design of the case allows you to do this without turning on the screen.
⚠️ Attention: After resetting, the system will require you to enter the password for the Google account that was synchronized with the phone earlier. This is Anti-Theft Protection (FRP). If you don't remember your Gmail details, your device will remain locked even after a reset.
It's also worth checking your battery level. The process of overwriting system partitions requires energy. If the phone turns off while the data is being formatted, it can damage the bootloader and turn the device into a non-functional unit. It is advisable to have at least 50-60% charge or connect the device to a charger.
Method one: using Recovery mode
The most universal method that works on most devices, regardless of the model or firmware version, is entering recovery mode (Recovery Mode). This is a special service partition that boots separately from the main operating system. This is where diagnostic and reset tools are stored.
To enter this mode, you must use a combination of physical buttons. Since the screen is locked and the sensor doesn't respond to swiping down to bring up the shutdown menu, we rely only on mechanical controls. The algorithm of actions may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer, but the logic remains the same.
First, turn off the smartphone completely. If a normal shutdown is not possible due to a lock, try holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds until a forced reboot and immediately proceed to the next step. Then hold down the button combination. Most often this is Volume Up + Power. On some models Samsung you may need to connect the USB cable to the computer before pressing the buttons.
When the manufacturer's logo or menu with text in English appears on the screen, release the buttons. Navigation in this menu is carried out using the volume buttons (up/down), and the selection of an item is confirmed with the power button. You need to find the line Wipe data/factory reset.

Method two: Google “Find My Device” service
If your phone is connected to the Internet (via Wi-Fi or a mobile network) and geolocation is enabled, you can reset it remotely. This method is convenient because it does not require manipulation of buttons and is suitable for those who are afraid of damaging physical controls.
To do this, you will need another device: a computer, tablet or a friend's phone. Go to the official service google.com/android/find and log in using the same Google account that is used on the locked smartphone. The system will automatically determine the location of your gadget on the map.
In the side menu you will see three main options: “Ring”, “Block” and “Wipe device”. We are interested in the last point. By clicking on “Wipe device”, you will send a command to your phone. As soon as it receives a signal from the network, the process of deleting all data and resetting settings will begin.
This method has one critical limitation: the phone must be online. If the battery is low or the device is in airplane mode, the command will be executed only after the next connection to the network. It is also worth considering that after such cleaning, the device search function will stop working, since the account will be deleted from memory.
What to do if the phone is offline?
If the device is not connected to the network, the reset command will be queued. As soon as the phone appears in a Wi-Fi or mobile network coverage area, it will automatically follow the instructions to clear the data. You will receive a notification about this by email.
Nuances for Samsung and Xiaomi smartphones
Large manufacturers often modify the standard code Android, adding their own shells and levels of protection. This affects the procedure for entering recovery mode. For example, on modern smartphones Samsung with a shell One UI entry into Recovery is only possible when a USB cable is connected to the PC.
Without a cable connected, the button combination can simply reboot the phone in normal mode or display a robot image with the inscription “No command”. This is for security purposes so that attackers cannot easily reset the password on a stolen device. Make sure that the cable is working properly and the computer recognizes the connection.
Devices from Xiaomi (shell MIUI) and Huawei have additional protection. After resetting via Recovery, they may require not only a Google account, but also a password from Mi Account or Huawei ID, respectively. If you do not remember this data, unlocking will become an extremely difficult task, requiring contacting a service center with a purchase receipt.
| Manufacturer | Button combination | Input features |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Volume Up + Power (or Bixby) | Requires a USB cable to be connected to the PC |
| Xiaomi / Redmi | Volume Up + Power | Long press until the Mi logo appears |
| Google Pixel | Volume Down + Power | Menu first Bootloader, then select Recovery |
| Huawei / Honor | Volume Up + Power | Hold until vibration and the logo appears |
On some Motorola and Lenovo models, after the Android logo appears, you need to hold down the power button and quickly press Volume Up to get to the Recovery menu.
The process of confirming and completing the reset
After you have selected the item Wipe data/factory reset in the Recovery menu, the system will ask for confirmation. This is done to prevent accidental deletion of data. Usually you need to select Yes or Factory data reset and press the power button again.
The formatting process will start. Lines of code may run across the screen or the percentage of completion may be displayed. Do not under any circumstances try to interrupt this process, remove the battery (if it is non-removable) or reboot the phone. Intervention at this stage may damage the file system partition table.
When the operation is completed, the menu will return to its original state. Now you need to select item Reboot system now. The phone will reboot. The first launch after the reset will take longer than usual - from 5 to 15 minutes, as the system optimizes applications and creates new user profiles.
⚠️ Attention: Do not rush to set up your phone right away. Let it boot up completely and connect to the network. If the system is stuck on the logo for more than 20 minutes, the firmware may have failed and will require flashing via a computer.
A successful reset is confirmed by the appearance of a welcome screen with a choice of language, as when you turn on a new phone for the first time.
Data recovery after unlocking
After you complete After completing the initial setup and entering your Google account details, the synchronization process will begin. Android automatically try to restore contacts, call history and the list of installed applications from the cloud backup.
Photos and videos can be found in the service Google Photosif auto-upload was enabled there. Files saved on the memory card should appear in the gallery automatically after scanning the drive. To restore WhatsApp messages, you will need to have a local copy or backup in Google Drive, which you will confirm during the messenger setup process.
Unfortunately, files that were stored only in the internal memory and not synchronized with the cloud cannot be restored using standard means. There are paid apps for deep memory scanning, but their effectiveness on modern versions of Android with data encryption is extremely low.
Is it possible to recover data without backup?
The chances are close to zero. Modern versions of Android use disk encryption. When resetting, the encryption keys are deleted, making the remaining data unreadable garbage even for specialists.
Preventing blocking problems in the future
To prevent the situation from happening again, it is recommended to set up alternative unlocking methods. Biometrics such as Fingerprint or Face recognitionallow you to log into your phone without entering a code in everyday life. However, remember that after rebooting the device, the first login always requires a PIN or password.
Write your code in a safe place: in a paper notepad you keep at home, or in a password manager on your computer. Do not store photo entries with a code in the gallery of the phone itself - this is pointless when blocked. It's also a good idea to add a backup PIN in your lock screen settings.
Test Find My Device to work regularly. Make sure geolocation is enabled and Internet access is not restricted for Google system services. This is your main safety net in case you lose control of your device.
⚠️ Note: Recovery menu interfaces may vary depending on the Android version. If you don’t see the usual items, look for the “Advanced” or “System” section, where reset functions may be hidden.
Use smart locks (Smart Lock). They allow you to keep your phone unlocked when you are at home (by geolocation) or when it is connected to your smartwatch via Bluetooth.
Will a reset remove the virus from the phone?
Yes, in most cases, a full factory reset will remove the malicious software as it is stored in the user partition of memory, which is completely cleared. However, if a virus has penetrated the system partition (which is rare for ordinary users), the device may need to be flashed.
What is FRP after a reset?
FRP (Factory Reset Protection) is reset protection. After formatting, the phone will require you to enter the login and password of the Google account that was last synchronized with the device. This is done so that the thief cannot use the stolen phone after resetting the settings.
Is it possible to reset the phone through a computer without turning it on?
Usually no. To communicate with the computer, the phone must be turned on and unlocked (or be in a special boot mode that requires confirmation on the screen). If the phone is turned off and does not respond to buttons, a soft reset via a PC is impossible without disassembling and closing the contacts (Test Point method).
Will the memory card be reset when formatted?
The standard reset procedure through the Recovery menu affects only the internal memory. The microSD memory card remains untouched. However, if you selected the “Format SD card” option (which is rare and requires separate confirmation), the data on it will be deleted.
Why does the phone require a password for the old account?
This is a standard Google security measure. The system remembers the last authorized account. After resetting the settings, you must prove that you are the owner of the device by entering the details of this particular account. Entering any other account will not allow you to complete the setup.
