Smartphone owners often encounter with a situation when the device suddenly stops responding to commands or the screen lights up with an annoying message about blocking. Auto-lock on Android can be caused by many reasons: from the triggering of standard protective mechanisms to the actions of malware. Understanding the nature of this limitation is the first step to regaining full control over the gadget.
It is necessary to distinguish between a system screen lock, which protects personal data, and a software lock caused by viruses or erroneous device administrator settings. In the first case, we are talking about a PIN code or pattern, in the second, about the inability to use the phone due to pop-up windows. Google Play Protect and other built-in security services can also restrict access to certain functions if they deem the application dangerous.
This guide covers all basic unlocking scenarios. We'll cover methods for disabling standard lock screens, ways to remove ransomware banners, and procedures for removing restrictions imposed through the developer menu or corporate profiles. Read carefully, as incorrect actions can lead to data loss.
Disable the standard screen lock
The most common type of protection is a lock screen, which requires you to enter a password every time you turn on the display. To remove this feature, the user must have access to the system and know the current unlock code. The process may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer's shell, for example, from Xiaomi or from Samsung. Go to the main settings of your device and find the section responsible for security. It is usually called MIUI from Xiaomi or One UI from Samsung.
Go to the main settings of your device and find the section responsible for security. Usually it is called Security and locking or simply Lock screen. The system will ask for identity confirmation: enter your current pattern, PIN or fingerprint. Without this step, it is impossible to change the protection settings.
After successful authentication, select No or Do not use protection. The system will warn you that biometric data and application passwords will be deleted. Confirm the action. Now, when the device wakes up, the screen will be unlocked immediately, without asking for credentials.
- ๐ Go to
Settings โ Security โ Screen lock. - ๐ Enter the current password or pattern for confirmation.
- โ๏ธ Select the option
NoorPerformanceto disable protection.
โ ๏ธ Attention: Disabling the screen lock makes your personal data available to anyone who gains physical access to the phone. It is not recommended to do this if banking applications or confidential information are stored on the device.
Removing malicious blocking and banners
A situation where the screen is blocked by a pop-up window demanding to send an SMS or pay a fine usually indicates infection with a blocking virus. Such apps disguise themselves as system notifications or applications with useful content. It is often impossible to delete them in the standard way, since they intercept control of the interface.
First of all, try logging in Safe Mode. To do this, hold down the power button on the screen, and then in the menu that appears, long press the item Turn off or Reboot (depending on the model). On some devices, you need to hold down the physical volume down button when you turn on the phone. In safe mode, third-party applications do not start, which allows you to remove the culprit of the problem.
Find in the list of applications the suspicious software that you installed recently before the problem appeared. Often such viruses do not have an icon or name, appearing as an empty line in the list. Click on it and select Delete. If the button is inactive, go to the accessibility settings and revoke the rights of the suspicious application.
If the virus is not removed normally, try turning off the Internet before entering safe mode - this will prevent new blocker scripts from loading.
Removing restrictions through administrator rights
Some applications, especially antiviruses or parental controls, receive device administrator rights. This allows them to block factory resets or change passwords without the user's knowledge. To remove the auto-lock imposed in this way, you must first revoke these privileges.
Open the settings and enter the word Administratorsin the search bar. You will be taken to the menu Device administrator applications. There will be a list of apps that have elevated rights. Uncheck the box next to the application that blocks the phone and confirm the action in the dialog box that appears.
After revoking rights, the application will no longer control the system. Now you can remove it or change your screen lock settings as described in the first section. If the uninstall app option was grayed out (inactive) before this step, it should now become clickable.

In rare cases, malware is hidden from this list. Then you will need to use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) via a computer. Connect the phone to the PC, enable USB debugging and enter the command to remove the package:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 virus package name
Unlocking the SIM card and PUK code
Sometimes by auto-locking, users mean blocking the SIM card itself. This happens after you enter your PIN incorrectly three times. The phone requests PUK code (Personal Unblocking Key). Entering the PUK code incorrectly eight times will lead to complete and irreversible blocking of the SIM card, which can only be restored by replacing it with the operator.
The PUK code is usually indicated on the plastic card to which the SIM card was attached upon purchase. It can also be found in the personal account of the mobile operator on the website or in the application. Enter the eight-digit code in the request field. After this, the system will prompt you to come up with a new PIN code.
| Code type | Length | Consequences of the error | Where to find |
|---|---|---|---|
| PIN | 4 digits | SIM blocking after 3 attempts | User memory |
| PUK | 8 digits | Complete death of SIM after 8 attempts | SIM envelope / Personal account |
| Pattern key | 9 points | Data reset after 10-20 attempts | User memory / Google account |
โ ๏ธ Attention: Never select a PUK code at random. The number of attempts is limited and cannot be restored. If the code is lost, contact the operator's communication center with your passport to reissue the card.

Resetting settings via Recovery Mode
If you cannot remember the password or remove the virus, a radical method remains - completely resetting the device to factory settings (Hard Reset). This method will delete all data from the internal memory of the phone, including photos, contacts and applications, but is guaranteed to remove any software lock.
Turn off the smartphone completely. Then hold down the button combination to enter recovery mode. For most models this is Volume up + Power or Volume down + Power. Hold them down until the logo or Recovery menu appears. This menu is controlled by the volume buttons, and selection is made by the power button.
In the menu, find the item Wipe data/factory reset. Confirm your choice by going to item Yes or Factory data reset. The process will take a few minutes. Once completed, select Reboot system now. The phone will turn on like new, without passwords or locks.
What to do if the phone requires a Google account after a reset?
This is FRP (Factory Reset Protection) protection. You will need to enter the login and password for the Google account that was synchronized with the phone before the reset. If you do not remember the data, it will be extremely difficult to unlock the device legally.
Prevention of re-locking
To prevent the problem from returning, it is important to maintain digital hygiene. Do not install applications from unknown sources and carefully read the permissions that the software requests during installation. Regularly update your security system Android and antivirus software.
Use strong but memorable passwords. Write them down in a safe place or use a password manager. Set up the function Smart Lock (Smart Lock), which allows you to keep your phone unlocked in safe places, for example, at home or when connected to a watch, without completely disabling the protection.
Regularly backing up your data to the cloud will protect you from losing information if you are forced to reset settings due to locking.
Is it possible to remove the lock without losing data?
If this is a standard password that you have forgotten, then on modern versions of Android (from 5.0 and higher) it is almost impossible to reset it without losing data due to encryption. The only chance is to log in through your Google account (on older versions) or use the โForgot passwordโ function if it was previously configured.
Why does the phone lock itself after 30 seconds?
This is the screen sleep timer setting. Go to Settings โ Display โ Screen timeout and increase the time to 2 or 5 minutes. Also check if the โIn your pocketโ mode is enabled, which can turn off the screen if the sensor is falsely triggered.
The lock appeared after a system update, what should I do?
Sometimes software glitches occur after the update. Try clearing the partition cache (Wipe Cache Partition) via Recovery Mode, this will not delete your data. If this does not help, check to see if there are any applications installed that are incompatible with the new version of the OS.
How to remove ad blocking in the browser?
If blocking means pop-up ads, go to your browser settings (Chrome, Yandex, etc.) and disable notifications for suspicious sites in the section Site settings โ Notifications. Also install an ad blocker.
