Visual feedback from a smartphone is not just an aesthetic whim, but a vital necessity for comfortable control of the device. Many users are faced with a situation where, after updating the operating system or purchasing a new model, the usual charge icon, call indicator or volume marker disappears from the screen. This causes discomfort and forces you to go into the settings once again to check the status of the device. Fortunately, the mobile platform Android provides ample opportunities for customizing the interface.
The addition of one or another indicator depends on the specific model of your gadget and the version of the shell installed by the manufacturer. In pure Android, OneUI from Samsung or MIUI from Xiaomi paths to these settings can vary significantly. In this article, we will look at all the main methods: from built-in system functions to using third-party applications that will help you return or add the visual marker you need.
We will look at both standard solutions, such as displaying battery percentage, and more complex cases, for example, setting up an LED notification indicator on modern smartphones, where a physical diode is often missing. Understanding the principles of operation of system overlays will allow you to correctly configure the device to suit your needs without losing functionality.
Setting the battery charge indicator as a percentage
The most popular type of indication is an accurate display of the battery charge level. The standard battery icon often shows only an approximate level, which is inconvenient when the charge is low. To enable the display of numbers, you need to go to the system screen settings.
In most modern shells, this function is hidden in the section responsible for the status bar. You need to find the item Settings → Display → Status Bar or a similar path depending on the brand. The "Battery percentage" switch is usually located here. Activating this option will instantly add numbers next to the battery icon.
However, if standard methods fail to enable display, you can use developer tools. This method works on almost all devices running Android 10 and higher. You will need to activate developer mode by tapping seven times on the build number in the "About phone" section.
After activating the new menu, go to System → For developers. Find the "Network" or "Monitoring" section and enable the Display the charge level in the status baroption. This solution is universal if the manufacturer has hidden the standard setting in its shell.
On some models Samsung and Huawei the charge percentage can be seen, only by swiping the notification curtain down if “Hide in the status bar” is checked in the screen settings.
It is worth considering that enabling a constant digital display may slightly increase the power consumption of the screen, since the system has to update this interface element more often. For most users, this difference is unnoticeable, but when the charge is critically low, it is better to save every percentage.
Using the "For Developers" menu is the most reliable way to enable battery percentage if the manufacturer has removed this setting from the regular menu.
Activating the notification LED
Many modern smartphones have lost the physical LED indicator (LED), which creates Problems with missing important notifications in standby mode. If your device has an LED, but it does not blink, the problem lies in the accessibility settings or applications.
First, check the basic settings. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Improved visibility. In some versions Android this item is called “Light notification”. Make sure the switch is active. This is the system level of diode control.
If the system does not offer such settings, the manufacturer may have disabled this feature programmatically. In this case, emulator applications such as Light Flow or NotifyBuddycome to the rescue. They use the screen or camera flash to simulate the operation of an LED, creating color patterns for different applications.
- 🔴 Light Flow — allows you to set up complex blinking scenarios for each application separately.
- 🔵 NotifyBuddy —uses the area around the camera (if it is black when turned off) as an improvised indicator.
- 🟢 LED Blinker Notifications —a simple solution for devices without a hardware diode, using the screen.
It is important to understand the difference between a hardware and software indicator. The hardware diode consumes minimal energy and is visible even when the screen is off. Software emulation requires waking up the display or using the flash, which drains the battery much faster.
⚠️ Attention: Using applications that emulate the LED through the screen can lead to matrix burnout (for AMOLED) or rapid battery drain. Use them with caution.
Adding an Internet speed indicator
For users who want to monitor traffic consumption in real time, an Internet speed indicator will be useful. It displays the current download and upload speeds directly in the status bar or on the lock screen.
Smartphone owners Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco can activate this feature natively. Just go to Settings → Notifications and status bar → Internet speed and turn on the toggle switch. Numbers will appear next to the network icons.
On devices with pure Android or shells from Samsung this function is often missing out of the box. In this case, the only solution is to install third-party widgets or applications that create an overlay. A popular solution is the application Internet Speed Meter Lite.
After installing such an application, you will need to give it permission to display on top of other windows. This is a critical step, without which the indicator will not appear. In the permissions menu, find the item Display on top of other applications and allow access for the selected utility.
Why can the speed indicator show 0 Kb/s?
If the indicator shows zero, this does not always mean that the Internet is not working. There may be no active data packets being exchanged at the moment (for example, the music is buffered or the page has already loaded). The indicator reacts only to an active data stream.
Remember that constant speed monitoring requires little processor resources. Although the impact is minimal, on very old devices this can affect the overall smoothness of the interface.
Volume and Do Not Disturb Indication
Often, users accidentally activate vibration or Do Not Disturb mode and then cannot figure out why the phone is not ringing. A visual sound mode indicator helps avoid such situations. Typically, this icon appears in the status bar automatically, but you can customize it.
In the sound settings, find the section Do Not Disturb mode. Here you can configure your schedule and rules, and choose whether to display an icon in the status bar. Make sure that the option Show icon is activated. This will allow you to always see the status of the phone.
To indicate the current volume when adjusting with buttons, you can use third-party themes or system modifications, however, in the standard Android the volume slider disappears after a few seconds. Some launchers, for example Nova Launcher in combination with plugins, allow you to create a volume widget on the desktop.
| Indicator type | Where it is located | Impact on battery | Complexity settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery percentage | Status bar | Minimum | Low |
| Internet speed | Status bar / Widget | Low | Medium |
| LED (emulation) | Screen / Flash | High | High |
| Do Not Disturb Mode | Status Bar | Absent | Low |
Setting up visual markers for sound modes is especially important for those who are often in meetings or in public places. A missed icon can lead to an awkward situation when the phone rings at the wrong moment.

Using third-party launchers for customization
If the built-in system tools do not allow you to add the desired indicator, third-party launchers come to the rescue. These are apps that completely replace the desktop and status bar, providing unlimited possibilities for adding widgets and indicators.
Popular launchers, such as Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher or Smart Launcher, have plugin stores or built-in editors. With their help, you can add an indicator of the weather, exchange rates, the number of unread messages and much more directly to the main screen.
For advanced users, it is possible to edit the status bar through special modules, if the device has Rootrights. However, we do not recommend this method for ordinary users, as it may break the system and void the warranty.
When installing the launcher, remember that it becomes the active interface by default. To return to the standard view, you will need to go to the application settings, find the current launcher and clear the default settings, after which the system will prompt you to select another option.
⚠️ Attention: Third-party launchers may consume more RAM than the manufacturer's standard shell. On devices with 3 GB of RAM or less, this can lead to frequent unloading of background applications.
Choosing a launcher is a compromise between functionality and performance. If your goal is only to add one specific indicator, it may be easier to use a separate widget application than to change the entire interface.
Before installing a new launcher, take screenshots of the arrangement of icons on the current desktop, so that you don’t waste time restoring the usual structure.
Solving problems with missing indicators
There are situations when indicators disappear suddenly, without any action on the part of the user. Most often this is due to an error in the system process SystemUI, which is responsible for rendering the interface. Rebooting the device often solves this problem.
If a simple reboot does not help, try clearing the system interface cache. To do this, go to Settings → Applications → Show system processes. Find Android system interface (or SystemUI) in the list and select "Clear cache". Do not click "Clear data" to avoid resetting the status bar settings.
In rare cases, the problem may be caused by a conflict with a recently installed application that has overlay rights on top of windows. Try to remember what apps you installed before the indicators disappeared, and remove them temporarily to check.
It is also worth checking if the power saving mode is turned on. In extreme power saving mode, the system can turn off unnecessary interface elements, including some indicators, to extend the operating time of the device.
Why does the battery indicator show the wrong percentage?
Incorrect display of the charge percentage is often due to desynchronization of the power controller and software. Try discharging the phone until it turns off completely, then charge it to 100% without turning it on. After this, turn on the device. If the problem persists, the battery may be physically worn out.
Is it possible to add a processor temperature indicator?
Yes, there are special monitor applications for this, such as CPU Throttling Test or widgets from 3C Toolbox. However, they require constant polling of sensors, which increases battery consumption. In the standard Android settings, such an indicator is not provided.
How to return the NFC indicator if it has disappeared?
The NFC indicator usually appears only when the tag is read or when trying to pay. If the icon hangs constantly, this is an error. Try turning NFC off and on in the notification shade. If it doesn’t help, restart your smartphone.
Does adding indicators affect the phone’s warranty?
Using standard settings and applications from Google Play does not affect the warranty. The warranty can be canceled only if you obtain root access, unlock the bootloader or physically modify the device.
Why are there no settings for indicators on the new phone?
Manufacturers often simplify the interfaces in new models, removing “unnecessary” settings. In such cases, the only option is to use third-party launchers or wait for firmware updates that can return functionality.
