Owners of modern head units based on Android often encounter an incomprehensible item in the settings menu called Car Set. This is not just a technical option, but a central control unit for integrating the multimedia system with the electronics of your car. Without the correct configuration of this section, you will not be able to use the buttons on the steering wheel, you will not see data on engine temperature or open doors, and the backlighting of the buttons may not work correctly.
Essentially, Car Set (sometimes called Factory Settings or Car Settings) is a software intermediary interface. It translates signals from the car's standard wiring into commands that are understandable for the Android operating system. Many users ignore this section, believing that the radio should work “out of the box,” but this is where the answers to 90% of problems with devices not working correctly lie.
In this article we will look in detail at how to find this hidden section, what password to enter and what parameters need to be changed for complete synchronization. You will learn why the selected incorrect protocol model can lead to a complete failure of audio system control and how to avoid this.
What is hidden behind the term Car Set
The term Car Set denotes a set of factory settings specific to a particular car model and the installed radio. Unlike regular Android settings, which control Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, this section controls hardware compatibility. Here you configure the parameters CAN buses, the logic of the steering buttons and the behavior of the system when starting the engine.
Developers of head units, such as Teyes, Podofo or Joying, create universal firmware. For the same device to work in both Toyota and BMW, a flexible configuration tool is needed. Car Set allows you to select the right driver to interact with the on-board computer. If you select the wrong protocol, the radio will simply not “see” the car.
It is important to understand that changing the settings in this section requires caution. Incorrect settings may result in audio being played from only one speaker and the rear view camera not switching automatically. This is not a software glitch, but the result of a logical discrepancy between the selected parameters and the actual configuration of your car.
⚠️ Attention: Before making any changes to the Car Set section, it is strongly recommended to take a photo of the screen with the current settings. This will allow you to quickly return to the original values in the event of a malfunction of the vehicle systems.
If you are not sure about the type of CAN bus of your car, refer to the documentation for the radio or consult with the seller. Incorrect choice of bus type (for example, High Speed instead of Low Speed) can lead to a lack of communication with the control unit.
How to enter the engineering menu and find settings
Access to the section Car Set is usually hidden from the average user to prevent accidental breakdown of the system. Login is carried out through a special engineering menu, protected by a password. The path to it may differ depending on the firmware version and device manufacturer, but the general algorithm remains similar.
Most often you need to go to the main settings of the device, find the “About the device” or “Factory settings” section. When you click on this item, the system will ask for a digital code. The most common passwords for popular brands: 8878, 1234, 0000 or 3368. For devices on chips Rockchip the code is often used 1617.
After successfully entering the password, a menu with many tabs will open. You need to find a tab with the name Car, Vehicle or Protocol. This is where the switch is located Car Set. The interface may look ascetic, but each point here is critical for the operation of the hardware.
List of popular passwords for different chipsets
For Rockchip chips (R16, PX3, PX5): 1617, 3368, 8878. For Allwinner chips: 1234, 0000, 8888. For Intel Atom chips: 123456, car. If standard codes do not fit, try entering the code specified in the instructions for your specific radio model.
Setting up the CAN bus and communication protocols
The most important step in the section Car Set is setting up the CAN bus. This is a digital network through which vehicle control units exchange data. The radio must correctly read this data in order to display information about speed, engine speed and fuel level.
In the settings menu you have to select the car manufacturer (Car Brand) and a specific model. After this, the system will prompt you to select the protocol type. An error at this stage will result in the radio display showing zero values or not displaying the on-board computer data at all. Modern devices often have an auto-search function, but manual setup is more reliable.
If your car does not support a CAN bus (older models), you will need to configure the analog connection of the steering wheel buttons through a resistive matrix. In this case, in the section Car Set mode is selected Steering Wheel instead of the CAN protocol. This requires a separate button training procedure, which we will talk about below.
| Setting parameter | Function description | Possible values |
|---|---|---|
| Car Brand | Selecting a car brand for loading drivers | Toyota, Ford, VW, BMW, Universal |
| CAN Type | Exchange protocol type data | High Speed, Low Speed, GMSL |
| Steering Wheel | Mode control of buttons on the steering wheel | CAN Bus, Analog (Resistive), None |
| Light Control | Control of the backlight of the radio buttons | Auto, Day, Night, Off |
The correctly selected CAN bus protocol is the foundation for stable operation. If after setting the speed data does not appear, try switching the tire type from High to Low or vice versa without changing the car model.
Configuration of steering control buttons
Control of the audio system from the steering wheel is one of the most popular functions. In the Car Set section you can assign actions for each button. Even if the protocol is selected correctly, manual adjustment is sometimes required, especially if the buttons perform double functions (short and long press).
The setup process usually looks like this: you select a function (for example, “Volume +”), then press the corresponding button on the steering wheel and hold it for a few seconds until a sound confirmation is heard. The system remembers the resistance or digital signal code. Repeat the procedure for all the necessary buttons: switching tracks, answering a call, activating the voice assistant.
It is worth noting that some advanced radios support learning gestures. For example, holding the Up button can launch the navigator, and double-clicking can change the sound source. All these scenarios are registered in the menu Car Set in the steering wheel control tab.
- 🎵 Volume: Set up separate actions for a short press (step +1) and a long press (quick increase).
- 📞 Phone: Assign a button for accepting a call and a separate button for rejecting a call or switching between interlocutors.
- 🗺️ Navigation: It is convenient to assign one of the free buttons (often “Mode” or “Mute”) to quickly launch maps.
Setting up the rear view camera and parking sensors
Correct display of the image from the rear view camera also depends on the settings in Car Set. Here you need to specify the type of video signal (CVBS, AHD 720p, AHD 1080p) and the data transfer protocol. If you select the wrong format, you will see either a black and white image with ripples, or a blue screen instead of a picture.
Parking lines should be given special attention. In most cases, the radio tape recorder generates them programmatically. In the settings menu, you can enable the display of static lines, dynamic (rotating with the steering wheel) or disable them altogether. For dynamic lines to work, it is necessary that in section Car Set the reading of the steering angle via the CAN bus is correctly configured.
Also in this section, the delay for turning off the screen after switching the gear to mode “D” is adjusted. This is a useful feature that allows you to see obstacles immediately after you start moving, if you have moved only a few centimeters. The delay time is usually adjusted with a slider from 0 to 5 seconds.
⚠️ Attention: When setting the camera format (AHD/CVBS), make sure that your physical camera supports the selected standard. Software switching will not turn an analog camera into a digital one.
Power management and ACC mode
One of the common problems is incorrect behavior of the radio when starting the engine. The device may turn off when the starter is running or, conversely, not turn off after the key is removed. This is responsible for setting the power mode in the section Car Set.
There are two main modes: ACC and Constant Power. In ACC mode, the radio only turns on when the key is turned to the ignition position. In always-on power mode, the device can remain on to download updates or record DVR, but requires the sleep timer to be set correctly.
If you have a car with a Start/Stop button, you often need to activate a special option in Car Set, which emulates the ACC signal in software, since the key is not physically turned. Without this option, the radio may think that the car is turned off and go into sleep mode while driving.

Solving common problems and errors
Even with careful settings, failures may occur. The most common problem is no sound after a firmware update or factory reset. In 80% of cases, the solution lies in the wrong type of amplifier in the section Car Set. You need to switch the setting from External Amp to Internal Amp or vice versa.
Another common mistake is a mismatch in screen resolution. If the interface looks stretched or the buttons are out of place, check the tab Display inside the factory settings. For modern radio tape recorders, the standard is resolution 1024x600 or 1280x720. Selecting the wrong value will make the touch control inaccurate.
If the radio reboots spontaneously when you turn on the headlights or air conditioning, this indicates a voltage drop. In the section Car Set sometimes there is an option “Voltage Protection”. Try lowering the protection threshold, but remember that this is a temporary solution, and the problem may be in the car wiring.
Why does the radio not see the buttons on the steering wheel after setup?
Most likely, the wrong connection type is selected. If you do not have a CAN adapter, you must select the “Analog” or “Resistive” mode and go through the button learning procedure again. Also check if the wire connecting the steering wheel buttons (usually the Key1 or Key2 wire) on the rear panel of the radio has not come loose.
How to reset Car Set settings to factory settings?
Inside the factory settings menu there is often a “Reset” or “Default” button. If the system does not respond, you can perform a Hard Reset through the Recovery Menu, but this will delete all installed applications and music. Be careful.
Can Car Set protocols be updated?
Yes, manufacturers periodically release updates to the protocol database (MCU Update). Download the update file from the official website of your radio manufacturer, write it to a USB flash drive and run the installation through the “System Update” menu. This may add support for new car models.
Does the Car Set setting affect the sound quality?
Indirectly yes. Choosing the right amplifier type and adjusting the equalizer associated with the listening mode (Driver, All, Passenger) affects the soundstage. In addition, the correct operation of the CAN bus allows the radio to automatically lower the volume when navigation prompts are received.
