A modern smartphone is a center for processing information flows, and push notifications play a key role here. They instantly report new emails, instant messenger messages, news and system events. However, an uncontrolled flow of messages can turn a useful tool into a source of constant irritation and stress.

It’s even worse when important notifications from the bank or work chats are lost among hundreds of promotional offers from games and stores. Many users do not even realize that the operating system Android provides powerful and flexible tools for filtering this flow. You can not just turn everything on or off, but fine-tune the behavior of each individual application.

In this article we will look in detail at where the hidden notification settings are, how to find a specific application in the general list and what parameters are responsible for sound, vibration and display on the lock screen. Understanding these mechanisms will allow you to regain control of your device and increase productivity.

Global notification control center

The first place any user who wants to put things in order should look is the general system settings section. There is a single control panel here that allows you to see the overall picture of which applications have the right to bother you.

The path to this section may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer's shell (for example, MIUI, OneUI or ColorOS), but the logic remains the same. You need to open the settings and find the item related to sound or notifications. Usually it is simply called Notifications or Sound and vibration.

Inside this menu you will see a switch "Allow notifications" at the very top. If you turn it off, the phone will be completely silent, even ignoring calls (depending on the OS version). Below is a list of all installed apps. The system automatically sorts them: first there are those from which you receive the most messages, and then - rarely used ones.

⚠️ Attention: Be careful when using the "Prohibit all notifications" function at the system level. This may result in missing critical signals, such as antivirus alerts, calendar reminders, or battery charging status.

To configure a specific service in detail, just click on its name in the list. This will open a custom panel where you can mute sound, turn off pop-ups, or hide the content of a message on the lock screen. This is a basic level of control available on any device.

Setting up notifications for individual applications

Global settings are good for quick blocking, but the real magic begins when working with the settings of specific applications. Each modern application, be it Telegram, Viber or a banking client, registers several types of notifications in the system, called notification channels. Channels allow developers to separate important events (for example, an incoming call) and minor ones (an advertising mailing or an offer to rate an application). The user can disable the advertising channel while leaving the personal message channel active. To do this, you need to go to the application settings, which we talked about above, and click on the item.

Channels allow developers to separate important events (for example, an incoming call) from unimportant ones (a promotional mailing or an invitation to rate an application). The user can disable the advertising channel while leaving the personal message channel active. To do this, you need to go to the application settings, which we talked about above, and click on the item Notification categories or simply scroll down the list.

You will see a list of all possible types of notifications. Some of them are marked with a lock icon - these are high priority channelswhich the system does not recommend disabling, since they are responsible for the vital functions of the service. The remaining channels can be freely modified.

☑️ Audit application settings

Completed: 0 / 5

Particular attention should be paid to the parameter "Importance". It determines exactly how the phone will respond to the message. If you select the Silent option, the notification will appear in the curtain, but will not make sounds or vibrate. This is an ideal option for news aggregators or games where you want to see information, but do not want it to interrupt your sleep or work.

Also in this menu you often find an option Pop-up notifications. It is responsible for the appearance of a banner on top of the current screen. This is convenient for instant messengers, but for email clients or marketplaces this function is often unnecessary and overlaps the content that you are reading at the moment.

Management via the notification curtain

The fastest way to set up an annoying notification is to do it right at the moment it appears. You don't need to delve into the depths of the settings menu if a message comes up on your screen right now that annoys you. The interface Android allows you to control the source directly from the curtain.

When you unlock the phone and see a new message, do not rush to swipe it. Instead, try long pressing (tap and hold) on the notification text. The system will instantly offer a context menu of actions.

In the menu that appears, you will see several options for the development of events:

  • 🔇 Mute the sound: Notifications from this application will arrive, but quietly, without vibration or sound signal.
  • 🚫 Disable notifications: Complete blocking of any messages from the selected one source.
  • ⚙️ Settings: Direct transition to the detailed settings menu for this particular application.
  • 🏷️ Category: Sometimes the system offers to disable only a specific type of messages (for example, only “Marketing Offers”), while saving the rest.

This method is especially effective for combating spam from little-known applications. Often we install a game or utility, forgetting to immediately limit its appetite for sending advertisements. A long press allows you to solve the problem in two seconds without interrupting your current activity.

💡

If a long press does not bring up the menu, try first swiping the notification slightly left or right (not all the way) so that the settings gear appears, and click on it.

Do not disturb mode and priorities

Sometimes you do not need to just set up individual applications and create temporary silence for concentration or relaxation. For these purposes, Android there is a mode Do Not Disturb (Do Not Disturb). Unlike silent mode, which simply turns off the sound of the speakers, this tool works much smarter.

You can activate it through the quick settings panel (swipe from top to bottom twice) or in the section Sound and vibration → Do not disturb. The main feature of this mode is the ability to create a list of exceptions. You can set the system to only allow calls from your Favorites contacts or repeat calls (if someone calls a second time within 15 minutes, the system considers it an emergency).

In the mode settings, you can also allow interruptions from certain applications. For example, you can set complete silence at night, but allow notifications from an alarm clock or instant messenger through which communication with you may be urgently required.

Interruption type Description of action Recommendation
Calls Allow everyone / Favorites / No one Select "Favorites" for night mode
Messages Allow from any / Favorites It is better to disable it completely, except for emergency ones cases
Events and reminders Sound calendar alert Leave it on so as not to oversleep the meeting
Repeated calls Call from the same number twice in 15 min Always enable this option for safety

It is important to understand the difference between complete mute and Do Not Disturb mode. In the latter case, notifications still accumulate in the curtain and on the lock screen (unless otherwise configured), they simply do not make sounds. This allows you not to miss information, but to get acquainted with it at a convenient time.

Hidden settings and channels Android 13+

Starting with version Android 13, Google has introduced even stricter control over notifications. Now, when you first install the application, the system asks for permission to send notifications. If you accidentally click Deny, the app will never be able to bother you until you manually change this decision.

Many users are faced with a situation where the application is installed, but notifications do not arrive. The reason often lies precisely in this initial prohibition. To correct the situation, you need to go to Settings → Applications, select the desired app and find the item Notifications. There will be a main switch that needs to be activated.

In addition, new versions of the system have a function notification history. If you accidentally brushed off an important message without reading it, you can find it in the journal. This feature may be disabled by default, so you should check its availability in the section Notifications → Notification history.

⚠️ Attention: Enabling notification history means that the text of all your messages (even private ones) will be saved in the phone's memory in clear text. Anyone who has access to the unlocked screen will be able to read them. Use this function with caution.

Also in the advanced settings you can find the parameter "Status Bar". It allows you to hide the app icon in the top status bar even when notifications are coming. This helps to visually clear the interface, leaving the notifications center functionality intact.

What are silent notifications?

Silent notifications are messages that appear at the very bottom of the notification list, do not make sounds, do not vibrate and are not displayed on the screen blocking. They are only available when the curtain is fully open. This is an ideal way to receive information from background applications without being distracted by them.

Solving problems with notification delivery

The opposite situation also happens: the settings are checked, permissions are given, but messages do not arrive. Most often, the problem lies not in the system, but in the aggressive optimization of the battery, characteristic of many smartphone manufacturers (Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei). The system "kills" background processes to save power, which prevents the application from connecting to the server.

To guarantee delivery, you need to add the application to power saving exceptions. The path usually looks like this: Settings → Battery → Battery optimization (or Autostart). Find the desired application in the list and select mode "No restrictions" or "No optimize".

Another common reason is limiting background data transfer. Check in the application settings (Mobile data) whether it is allowed to use the Internet in the background. Without this right, the push notification simply cannot be loaded until you open the application manually.

💡

If notifications do not arrive, in 90% of cases battery saving is to blame. Add the application to the optimization exclusion list and allow background data transfer.

It is also worth checking whether traffic saving mode is enabled in global network settings. It can block sync for all apps except those you whitelist. This is especially true when using mobile data, but can also affect Wi-Fi in some configurations.

Why do notifications arrive with a delay?

The delay is most often due to the fact that the Android system tries to combine several data packets to save power (batch transmission). Also, the delay can be caused by a weak network signal or overload of Google Play Services servers, which act as an intermediary in delivering push notifications.

How to disable notifications from only one contact in the messenger?

This is done not in the general settings of the phone, but inside the messenger application itself. Go to a chat with a specific person, click on their name or avatar at the top, find the “Notifications” option and select “Mute” or “Mute.” This cannot be differentiated at the Android system level.

What to do if the notification icon on the application icon (badges) disappears?

Check the settings of the launcher or the “Notifications” section. There should be an item “Badges on application icons” or “Badge”. Make sure the switch is active. On some phones (for example, Samsung) this is configured in the "Home Screen" section in general settings.

Is it possible to set different sounds for different contacts?

Yes, but this is configured in the Contacts or Phone application, not in the general notification menu. Open your contact card, tap Edit, and look for the Ringtone or Notification Sound field. There you can select a unique file for a specific person.

Is it safe to disable notifications from system applications?

It is not recommended to disable notifications from Google Play services, security systems or updates. You may miss a critical warning about a virus, low disk space, or the need to install a security patch, which will leave the device vulnerable.
