Owners of non-standard head units from China are often faced with a situation where the functionality of their favorite radio no longer meets modern requirements. Navigation doesn't work correctly, new apps won't install, and Bluetooth loses connection. In such cases, the only solution is firmware updatewhich can not only correct errors, but also significantly expand the capabilities of the device.
However, this process is not without risks. Chinese manufacturers often use unified boards for different brands, which makes finding the right software a detective investigation. An incorrectly selected file can turn expensive equipment into a useless “brick”, the restoration of which will require soldering and a special programmer.
In this article we will analyze all the stages of preparing and installing a new operating system on your device. You will learn how to correctly determine the type of processor, where to look for the latest software versions, and what precautions must be taken to ensure that the update is successful.
Identification of the model and firmware version
The first and most critical step is to accurately determine the characteristics of your device. Just knowing the model of the car or the appearance of the radio is not enough, since inside the same case there can be completely different motherboardss. First you need to go to the system settings.
Usually the path to system information looks like Settings → About device or Factory settings. In this section you will find information about the Android version, build number and most importantly the MCU version. It is the MCU (Microcontroller Unit) that is responsible for controlling the screen, buttons, sound and CAN bus of the car.
If the standard menu is password protected, try entering one of the popular factory codes. Combinations like 8878, 1234, 0000 or 3368are often used. After entering the password, an extended menu will open where you can see detailed information about the hardware.
⚠️ Attention: Never change the settings in the Factory Settings section unless you are 100% sure of their purpose. Resetting the screen calibration or incorrectly selecting the CAN bus type can lead to the steering wheel buttons and touch input not working.
Take a photo of the system information screen on your phone before starting any actions. This will help you more accurately select the firmware on forums or in support chats.
Write down all the numbers and letters that you see on the screen. Pay special attention to the lines MCU Version and System Version. Often, it is by the first letters of the MCU version that you can determine the manufacturer of the board (for example, T3, X8, K7).
Searching and preparing the firmware file
After you have recorded the device data, the search for the update file itself begins. Official websites of Chinese brands are often unstable or absent altogether, so the main source of information is specialized forums and communities of owners.
You need to find a file that corresponds specifically to your version of MCU. Firmware from a different version of the controller may start the installation process, but after rebooting the device will stop responding to clicks or the screen will go dark. Look for files with the extension .zip or .img, specifically designed for updating via USB.
The firmware file should be placed in the root of the flash drive. Do not put it in folders, otherwise the radio will simply not see the update. Also make sure that the flash drive is formatted in the file system FAT32, since many standard bootloaders do not support NTFS.
| Device type | File extension | Location location | Requirements carrier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal 2DIN | update.zip | Flash drive root | FAT32, up to 32 GB |
| T3/T8 devices | system_update.img | img folder (sometimes) | FAT32, USB 2.0 |
| MTK platforms | ota.zip | Flash drive root | FAT32, without encryption |
| OEM specific | firmware.bin | Flash drive root | FAT32, single-channel port |
It is important to check the integrity of the downloaded archive. If the file is corrupted during download, the installation process will be interrupted midway, which may result in a software crash. It is recommended to download firmware only from trusted sources where users have confirmed successful installation.
Preparing equipment for updating
High-quality preparation is the key to successful flashing. You should not use the first accessories you come across. Old or low-quality flash drives often cause data reading errors at the most crucial moment.
Use a drive with a capacity of no more than 32 GB. Radios with an outdated bootloader may simply not see large flash drives or with the exFAT file system. Before writing a file, it is better to completely format the drive.
☑️ Preparing for the update
Ensure stable power to the device. Voltage surges in the vehicle's on-board network can interrupt data recording into memory. It is best to carry out the procedure with the engine running or the starter connected.
⚠️ Attention: Never start updating if the voltage in the on-board network is below 12 volts. A sudden power outage while recording system partitions guarantees failure of the device.
Remove all unnecessary USB devices, memory cards from the radio and disconnect unnecessary connections. At the time of updating, only a flash drive with firmware should be in the port so that the system does not try to read data from other sources.
The process of installing an update via USB
The installation process itself usually starts automatically as soon as the radio detects the correct file on the flash drive. Insert the prepared flash drive into a USB port, preferably one that is connected directly to the head unit (often marked with an update icon or located on the back).
A window should appear on the screen asking you to start the update. The system will show the current version and the new version of the software. If you are sure of the correct choice, press the confirm button. After this, the process of unpacking and writing files will begin.
System: Checking integrity... OKSystem: Unpacking image... 45%
System: Write partition System...
System: Updating MCU... Do not turn off the power!
During the process, the radio may reboot several times, the screen may go dark and turn on again. This is normal behavior. The main thing is not to remove the flash drive or press the control buttons until the process is completely completed.
What to do if the update is frozen?
If the progress bar does not move for more than 15 minutes, the file may be damaged or the flash drive is faulty. Try carefully removing the flash drive and inserting it into another USB port. If this does not help, a forced reboot will be required, but this carries risks.
After the installation is complete, the device will reboot in normal mode. The first boot after the update may take longer than usual - up to 5-10 minutes. The system carries out the initial setup and optimization of applications.
Update via the engineering menu and Wi-Fi
Some modern models of Chinese radios support updating over the air (OTA) or via a local network. This method is more convenient, since it does not require searching for files and using flash drives, but it only works if the manufacturer’s servers are active.
To check for updates, go to menu Settings → System update. If the device is connected to a Wi-Fi access point (for example, from your smartphone), it will contact the server and offer to download the new version.
There may also be a hidden local update function in the engineering menu. The path may look like Factory settings → Software update → File selection. Here you can specify the path to the firmware file if it is saved in the internal memory or on the SD card.
⚠️ Attention: The OTA function on Chinese devices often does not work correctly due to server blocking or domain name changes. If the update is not found, do not try to replace system files manually without in-depth knowledge of Linux.
Using Wi-Fi to transfer large firmware files can be unstable. If the connection is interrupted in the middle of a download, the file will be damaged. It is recommended to use a wired connection via USB for critical updates.
Solving problems after flashing
After a successful update, you may experience some features not working correctly. Often the sound and equalizer settings get lost, or the buttons on the steering wheel stop working. This is due to the fact that the new firmware resets the MCU configuration.
You will need to reconfigure the CAN bus type. Go to factory settings and select your car manufacturer and model from the list. If the model you need is not there, try going through similar options until you see a response to the control buttons.
After updating the MCU, be sure to perform a Factory Reset to avoid conflicts between old configuration files and the new system.
If the touch screen does not work correctly (presses do not coincide with the cursor), find the item in the settings "Screen calibration". Follow the instructions on the display by clicking on the crosses that appear in strict order.
If the radio does not turn on or constantly reboots (bootloop), the firmware version may not be suitable. The only way out in this situation may be to search for “rescue” firmware (recovery mode) or contact a service center to resolder the memory chip.
Is it possible to update Android on a Chinese radio to the latest version?
It depends on the hardware capabilities of the device. If the processor and RAM allow it, the manufacturer may release an update. However, often the hardware remains old, and only the software shell is updated, not the Android kernel.
What to do if the radio says “Update failed”?
Check the firmware file name and flash drive format. Try a different USB port or drive. Make sure that the MCU version in the file matches the version in the device, at least in basic numbers.
Will the update erase my music and settings?
In most cases, a full firmware update involves resetting all data to factory settings. Save important contacts, navigation settings and Wi-Fi passwords in advance.
Where can I find drivers for a Chinese radio on a PC?
Separate drivers are usually not required if you connect it as a drive. For debugging via ADB, you will need universal Google USB Drivers, but this is only necessary for advanced system modification.
