Managing default applications on Android

Every smartphone owner is faced with a situation when the device begins to open files or links in a way that is not expected. For example, you click on a link in the messenger, and it launches in a browser that you rarely use, or a video file tries to open in a standard player with a terrible interface instead of your favorite VLC or MX Player. This happens because the Android system has the concept of default applications.

The operating system remembers your choice after the first click of the “Always” button to speed up work in the future. However, habits change, new, more functional utilities are installed, and the old configuration begins to irritate. Fortunately, the architecture Android allows you to flexibly manage these parameters, returning the user full control over which software will respond to certain actions.

When you click on a file or link, the system sends a hidden request to all installed apps that can process that type of data. If a suitable application is found in the singular, it launches immediately.

However, if you have several browsers or video players installed, Android offers you to select one of them. At this moment, a dialog box appears with two important buttons: “Only now” and “Always”. Selecting the second option creates a permanent association between the file type and a specific app.

This association is stored in the system settings registry until you explicitly decide to break it. Understanding this principle is critical, as simply uninstalling a competing app is not always enough—sometimes a manual reset of priorities in system settings is required.

Global reset of application preferences

The most radical, but at the same time the most effective way to return the system to a “clean slate” state is to reset all application preferences. This operation does not delete your data, photos or contacts, it only clears the memory of which apps you have selected to perform specific tasks by default.

After completing this procedure, the next time you open any type of file, the system will again ask you what exactly you want to open it with. This is an ideal option if you don’t remember which application “hijacked” the opening of PDF documents or maps.

To perform this operation, you need to go to the settings section responsible for managing apps. The path may differ slightly depending on the model of your device, but the general logic remains the same.

Find the desired application in the list of installed apps. It may be called “Gallery”, “Browser”, “File Manager” or have a brand name, for example Adobe Acrobat. Go inside its settings.

Inside the application menu, find a section called Open by default or Launch by default. There you will see a button Remove default settings. Clicking on it will instantly break the connection between this application and the file types that it processed.

After cleaning, try again open the file type that was causing problems. The system should again offer you a choice, allowing you to assign a new leader for this task. This is a more secure and controlled approach.

Configuring action categories manually

Modern versions Android (starting from version 10 and higher) have a more advanced management tool. Now you can not only reset settings, but also explicitly tell the system which application should be used for certain categories of actions.

Using this menu allows you to avoid accidental changes. If you have hardcoded your browser in this menu, the system will not ask you every time you click on a link, even if you install a new browser tomorrow.

Managing the opening of links and domains

Links constitute a special category of problems. It often happens that links to YouTube open in the browser instead of the application, or links to maps launch the web version instead of the navigator. This is regulated by the “Links to open” settings.

Go to the settings of the specific application that should open links (for example, YouTube or Telegram). Find the section Openable links or Supported web addresses.

Here you will see a switch Open supported links. Activate it. Below may be a list of specific domains. Make sure that the desired domains (for example, youtube.com) have the status "Open in this application."

This feature is especially useful for marketplaces and social networks. It allows you to configure the behavior so that advertising links open in the browser, and deep links within the application - in the native client.

Why do links not open in the application?

Often the reason is that the links are disabled in the settings, or the application does not have the rights to handle this particular domain. The problem could also be that another browser intercepts the intent before the system can offer the application. In this case, you need to reset the default settings of your competitor browser.

If the system is ignoring your settings, it may be worth checking to see if the "Don't open links" mode is enabled for that application. In some shells, this setting is reset after a system update, so periodic checking will not be superfluous.

Features of interfaces from different manufacturers

Although the kernel Android is the same, manufacturers are actively modifying the settings interface. What is easy to find on “pure” Android from Google can be hidden behind seven locks in the firmware of Chinese brands.

Frequent problems and their solutions

Even after proper configuration, users may encounter situations where the application behaves unpredictably. This is often due to cache or version conflicts.

If resetting to default does not help, try clearing the cache of the problematic application. Go to Settings → Applications → Select application → Storage → Clear cache. This will not delete your data, but it will update temporary files that could be causing associations to fail.

Also worth check access rights. An app may not be prompted to open files if it doesn't have permission to access the storage. In modern versions of Android, this is strictly controlled, and without explicit permission, the app simply “does not see” the files.

In some cases, completely reinstalling the application helps. Uninstalling and re-installing resets all internal flags of the app, forcing it to register in the system as a new participant, ready to intercept the necessary intents.

What to do if the “Remove Default Settings” button is inactive (gray)?

If the button is inactive, this means that this application is not currently assigned to perform any default actions. Therefore, there is nothing to reset. Try checking another application from the same category or perform a global reset of preferences.

Is it possible to set the default application for a specific file type (for example, only .mkv)?

In the standard Android interface, such fine-tuning is not possible. You select an app for the Video category as a whole. However, some third-party file managers allow you to configure associations in more detail within their own settings, but this will only work when opening files through this manager.

Why do all application settings get lost after a system update?

Major Android updates (for example, the transition from version 13 to 14) often change the internal security mechanisms and intent processing. For security purposes, the system can reset trusted associations between applications and files, requiring the user to reconfirm the selection.

How to prevent an application from asking “What to open?” every time?
