The need full reset (Hard Reset) on a tablet computer can arise for various reasons: the device has become slow, the pattern key has been forgotten, the system is generating critical errors, or you are planning to sell the gadget. Android provides several reliable ways to return the device to the factory state, but this process requires care.
Before you begin the procedure for deleting information, it is critically important to understand that data reset irrevocably erases all user files, installed apps, saved passwords and system settings. It is almost impossible to restore deleted data without a preliminary copy. If your tablet is frozen and does not respond to touches, you may need to use physical buttons to enter Recovery Mode.
In this material we will analyze in detail all the available methods for clearing memory, from the standard settings menu to advanced tools for service engineers. You will learn how to properly prepare your device to avoid losing valuable photos and documents. A reset via the settings menu automatically deletes your Google account, while a push-button reset requires manual confirmation of account deletion to protect against theft.
Preparing the device for the cleaning procedure
The first and most important step is to create a backup copy. Even if the tablet is unstable, try to synchronize your contacts and calendar with cloud storage Google Drive. For photos and videos, manual copying to an external drive or PC via USB cable.
Check the battery level is best. The process of formatting internal memory can take from 5 to 20 minutes depending on the amount of data and speed of the drive. If the device turns off in the middle of the process, it may damage file system and turn the tablet into a “brick”. It is recommended to charge the battery to at least 60-70%.
⚠️ Attention: If there is a memory card installed on the tablet microSD, remove it before starting the reset. In rare cases, the system may prompt you to format the external card, which will lead to loss of data on it.
Disable all additional locks if they are not the reason for the reset. We are talking about functions like Find My Device or third-party antiviruses with administrator rights. Sometimes they prevent the correct completion of the initialization procedure for the new system state.
☑️ Checklist before resetting
Reset through the system settings menu
This is the safest and easiest method available to every user who has access to the desktop. The interface may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer's shell (for example, MIUI, One UI or ColorOS), but the logic of action remains the same.
You need to open the “Settings” application and find the section responsible for managing the system. It is usually called "System", "General Settings" or "About Phone". Inside you will need to find the item “Reset settings” or “Restore and reset.”
Click on the option Data reset (or “Erase all data”). The system will issue a warning about which files will be deleted. Here you will see a list of applications and accounts that will be eliminated. Confirm the action by entering PIN code or the screen unlock pattern.
If the tablet asks for a password from your Google account after resetting, this is FRP protection. Make sure that you remember the data from the mail used on the device previously.
After confirmation, the tablet will reboot and begin the cleaning process. The screen may go dark and turn on several times - this is normal behavior. Android sequentially formats partitions /data and /cache, deleting user information.
Hard Reset via Recovery mode
If the tablet does not turn on, stuck on the logo or you forgot the unlock password, the only option is to use the Recoverymode. This method works at the bootloader level and does not require access to the operating system.
To enter this mode, you must use a combination of physical buttons. Most often, this is the simultaneous pressing of the button Volume Up and the button Power. Hold them for about 10-15 seconds until the manufacturer's logo or a menu with text in English appears.
In the menu Recovery the touch screen, as a rule, does not work. Navigation is carried out using the volume buttons (up/down), and the selection is confirmed with the power button. You need to find the item Wipe data/factory reset. After selection, the system will ask for confirmation, usually this is item Factory data reset or Yes.
What to do if the buttons do not work?
If the volume buttons are broken, you can try connecting a USB keyboard via an OTG cable. The arrow and Enter keys may work to navigate through the Recovery menu.
Once the process is complete, select the option Reboot system now. The tablet will reboot and the first boot may take longer than usual - 3 to 10 minutes. Do not interrupt the power at this moment.
The menu is available in several languages, including Russian.
Sometimes you need to hold the buttons until they vibrate.
A rare combination of three buttons at the same time.
| Manufacturer | Button combination | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Volume Up + Power (or Home) | |
| Xiaomi / Redmi | Volume Up + Power | |
| Huawei / Honor | Volume Up + Power | |
| Lenovo | Volume Up + Volume Down + Power |
Remote reset via Google service
This method is relevant if the tablet is lost, stolen or blocked by an attacker, but is connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network). The function works through the service Find My Device (Find device).
Go to the official website of the service from any other device (computer or smartphone) and log in to the same one Google accountthat was used on the tablet. In the list of devices, select the desired tablet.
In the control menu, select the option Wipe device. The system will warn you that all data will be deleted. After sending the command, the tablet will receive a signal to execute Factory Reset. If the device is currently offline, the command will be executed as soon as it appears online.
⚠️ Attention: Remote reset does not remove Google protection (FRP). After turning on, the tablet will still require you to enter the password for the account that was on it before the reset.
This method is also useful if you sold the tablet and forgot to log out of your account. Remote wipe ensures that the new owner will not gain access to your personal correspondence and photos.
Reset via computer and ADB
For advanced users, there is a reset method via USB debugging. This requires having the driver installed ADB on the computer and the “USB Debugging” option enabled on the tablet itself before problems arise.
Connect the tablet to the PC with a cable. Open a command prompt or terminal in your ADB tools folder. Enter the following command to reboot into recovery mode:
adb reboot recovery
Or, if you need to reset immediately without entering the menu, use the command:
adb shell recovery --wipe_data
This method allows you to bypass some software interface locks if the touch screen is partially not working. However, if debugging has not been enabled in advance, the computer simply will not see the device in debug mode.
The ADB method is only effective if debugging is enabled in advance. If you did not enable it in the “For Developers” menu, this method will not work.
FRP protection and account recovery
Modern devices based on Android 5.0 and higher are equipped with a protection system FRP (Factory Reset Protection). This is a mechanism that prevents the device from being used after an unauthorized reset.
If you performed a Hard Reset using buttons or via Recovery, during the first setup the tablet will require you to enter the login and password for the Google account that was synchronized with the device earlier. This is done to protect against theft: a thief, after resetting the settings, will not be able to use the tablet.
Enter your details exactly as they were entered previously. It is important to respect the case of letters. If you changed your password recently, try entering the old version, as synchronization may not have occurred before the reset.
What should I do if I don’t remember my Google password?
You will need to restore access to your account through the recovery procedure on another device (smartphone or PC) using the link accounts.google.com. Only after changing the password and waiting 24 hours (Google security requirement) will you be able to log in on the reset tablet.
Is it possible to bypass FRP protection?
There are no official ways to bypass FRP. All methods described on the Internet are vulnerabilities of specific software versions and are quickly fixed by security updates. An attempt to bypass may lead to a complete blocking of the device.
Will the operating system be deleted during a reset?
No, a standard data reset (Wipe Data) affects only the user partition. The operating system Android and pre-installed applications will remain in place in the form in which they were at the time of purchase or last update.
How long does the formatting process take?
Usually the process takes from 2 to 15 minutes. The time depends on the amount of internal memory (for example, 64 GB takes longer to clear than 16 GB) and the speed of the tablet's processor.
Do I need to remove the SIM card before resetting?
It is advisable. Although data from the SIM card (contacts, if stored there) is usually not erased, removing the card ensures that no operator network settings are reset or changed during the initialization process.
