The modern smartphone has become the main communication tool, and WhatsApp often takes the leading position in terms of memory consumption. Users notice that after a few months of active correspondence, the application begins to weigh several gigabytes, although text messages themselves take up negligible space. The main problem lies in the automatic saving of all incoming and outgoing media files, which accumulate in hidden system folders.
When the internal storage becomes full, the device begins to work slower, and there is simply nowhere to download new photos and applications. Clearing garbage in WhatsApp is not just deleting a couple of old pictures, but a complex process of managing databases and caches. In this article, we will look at safe and effective methods for freeing up space that will not harm your important correspondence.
It is worth understanding that standard cleaning methods through phone settings often do not affect the deep structures of the messenger. You will need to manually go through certain sections or use specialized tools within the application itself. A competent approach will allow you to restore the device's performance and free up valuable gigabytes for personal needs.
Analysis of space occupied in the application settings
Before taking radical measures, you need to determine exactly what is consuming your memory. WhatsApp has a built-in storage analyzer that shows the distribution of space between chats, documents and media. This is the safest way to start optimization, since it does not require third-party software.
To access this information, open the application menu and go to the section Settings, then select Storage and data and press Storage management. The system will show a list of chats sorted by the amount of space they occupy. It often turns out that 80% of the memory is occupied by only 3-5 active group conversations.
In the same section you will see a general summary: how much space is taken up by photos, videos, voice messages and documents. Android allows you to delete files directly from here by selecting specific items or using the “Select All” function. This action will instantly free up disk space.
- 📸 Photos — usually take up the largest volume, especially if there are many groups in chats with daily exchange of images.
- 🎥 Video files —even short videos can weigh tens of megabytes and quickly fill up memory.
- 📄 Documents —PDFs, APKs, and archives are often forgotten in conversations, but continue to take up space for years.
⚠️ Attention: Deleting media files through the built-in storage management removes them from the chat for all participants (if these are your files) or just for you. Be careful when cleaning important work correspondence.
Manual cleaning of WhatsApp folders through the file manager
Deeper cleaning is only possible through direct access to the file system Android. Starting with Android 11, the folder structure has changed and access to them has become more limited, but basic media files are still available for manual deletion. This method is effective when you need to delete old backups or system junk.
Open any file manager (for example, “My Files” or Files by Google) and follow the path Internal Storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media. All content subfolders are located here. Pay special attention to the folder WhatsApp Images i WhatsApp Video.
Inside the folder with images you will find a subdirectory Sent. This is where copies of all the pictures you've ever sent are stored. If you do not plan to restore the history of what you sent in recent years, you can safely empty this folder. The same goes for the folder Privateif you do not hide media files from the gallery.
Before mass deleting files through a file manager, copy important documents to your computer or cloud storage, since recovery through the trash can in this case may not be possible.
Another often ignored folder is WhatsApp Databases. It stores local backup copies of correspondence. By default WhatsApp stores copies for the last 7 days. If you use Google Drive backup, you don’t need local files from previous periods and can delete them, leaving only the file with the most recent date.
Using the “Clear Chat” function for group conversations
Group chats are the main generators of digital garbage. They can consist of hundreds of people, and dozens of messages appear there every day. The “Clear Chat” function allows you to delete your entire conversation history at once, leaving you in the group, but completely clearing the local database of this dialogue.
To use this, go to a specific chat, click on the name of the contact or group at the top of the screen and scroll down to the item Clear chat. The system will warn you that all messages will be deleted. This action is irreversible for your device, but will not affect the phones of other participants in the conversation.
If you do not want to delete the conversation completely, but just want to stop the flow of new notifications and automatic file downloads, use the function Mute and turn off media content. Go to Chat settings inside the dialog and select Media files → No (or "Wi-Fi Only") to limit automatic downloading.
☑️ Check before clearing the chat
- 🗑️ Full cleaning deletes text and media, freeing up maximum space.
- 🔕 Disable media prevents further memory clogging with new files.
- 📅 Clean by date allows you to delete messages older than a certain period (available in storage settings).
Delete cache and temporary files systems
Caches are temporary files that speed up the operation of the application, but over time they can swell to inadequate sizes. Unlike user data, the cache can be deleted without fear of losing correspondence. However, after cleaning, the application may run a little slower when first launched until it restores temporary files.
Go to Settings your smartphone, find the section Applications (or Application Manager) and select WhatsApp. Click on item Storage. Here you will see two buttons: “Clear cache” and “Clear data”. It is important not to confuse them!
Clicking on Clear cache safe and it is recommended to carry out this procedure regularly. Clicking Clear data (or “Reset”) will delete the account from the device, and you will have to re-verify via SMS and restore the backup. Do this only in case of serious failures in the messenger.
What is the difference between cache and data?
The cache contains temporary profile images and thumbnails that are created anew. Data is your message database, contacts and settings. Clearing data is equivalent to deleting the application.
It is also worth checking the folder Thumbnails in the file manager along the path Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/Thumbnails. Thumbnails of photos are stored here. If there are too many of them, they can take up hundreds of megabytes. Deleting this folder is safe - the thumbnails will be created again when viewing the gallery.
Setting up automatic deletion of messages
To prevent the problem of memory overflow from returning, it is wise to set up automatic deletion of messages. This function allows you to set a timer after which messages will be deleted automatically for all participants or just for you (the “Disappearing messages” function).
To configure, go to Settings → Privacy → Message disappearance timer. You can choose a period of 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. This is especially useful for group chats, where information quickly becomes outdated.
In addition, in the settings of the chat itself, you can enable the disappearance of messages only for yourself. This means that you will be able to see messages until you read them or until 90 days have passed, but they will not take up space on the server and in your local database forever. This the only way to ensure that old files will not take up space in the future.
| Type of cleaning | Impact on correspondence | Security | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearing cache | No influence | Absolutely safe | Once a month |
| Deleting media | Files will disappear from the chat | Safe (if not needed) | As full |
| Clearing chat | Complete deletion of history | Requires caution | For inactive chats |
| Resetting data | Deleting an account from the phone | Dangerous (backup required) | Only in case of errors |
⚠️ Attention: The menu interface may vary depending on the version Android and manufacturer’s shells (Samsung One UI, Xiaomi MIUI, Huawei EMUI). If you do not find the item, use the search inside the phone settings menu.
Optimizing media file download settings
The best cleaning is prevention. By default WhatsApp it is configured to automatically download all media files via mobile network and Wi-Fi. This leads to the fact that even if you did not open the chat, the heavy video is already loaded and takes up space.
Change the settings in the section Data and storage. In the “Media Autoload” block, select the option No for all types of networks, or leave the download only for Photo and only through Wi-Fi. It is better to download videos and documents manually by clicking.
Also disable saving to the gallery. In the settings Chats uncheck the item Visibility of media files (or “Save to gallery”). This will prevent duplication of files: they will be available inside the messenger, but will not clog up the main gallery of the phone and cloud synchronization (Google Photos).
Disabling auto-downloading of videos via the mobile network can save up to 2-3 GB of traffic and space per month for an active user.
Regular implementation of these actions will allow your smartphone based on Android to work quickly, and WhatsApp will not slow down the system. Remember that digital hygiene requires a little but constant attention for the device to serve for a long time and without failures.
Is it safe to delete the.Statuses folder?
Yes, the folder .Statuses (or Statuses) contains temporarily saved contact statuses, which you have viewed. Files are stored there for 24 hours. Deleting them is completely safe and does not affect the operation of the application, freeing up space.
What to do if after cleaning the necessary photos are missing?
If you deleted photos through “Storage Management”, they are deleted permanently. If you just cleared the cache, the photos should remain. Check the Recently Deleted (Recently Deleted) folder in your phone's gallery - sometimes Android stores deleted media there for 30 days.
Why does WhatsApp take up more space than shown in the phone settings?
This could be due to differences in counting methods or the presence of hidden log files. Also, the system may not immediately update the storage index. Try rebooting the device so that the recalculation of occupied space occurs correctly.
