Telegram is one of the most popular instant messengers, but over time it can take up gigabytes of memory on your Androidsmartphone. Photos, videos, stickers, voice messages and cache accumulate unnoticed, until one day the system issues a warning about lack of space. The problem is not only in volume: an overloaded messenger begins to slow down, takes longer to load media files and can even unauthorized deletion of old chats at a critical shortage memory. 1. Clearing the Telegram cache through Android settings

The fastest way to free 100–500 MB is to delete temporary cache files. They accumulate when viewing stories, downloading stickers and previewing videos. Unlike media files, the cache does not contain important data and is safe to clear.

How to do it:

  • 📱 Open Android Settings → Applications.
  • 🔍 Find Telegram in the list and tap on it.
  • 🗑️ Select Memory → Clear cache.
  • 🔄 If necessary, click Clear data (this will delete all local settings, except chats).

⚠️ Attention: Clear data (Clear Data) will reset all messenger settings, including topics, linked accounts and history search. Chats and media files will remain, as they are stored in a separate folder.

2. Deleting unnecessary media files manually

The main memory “eater” in Telegram is downloaded photos, videos and documents. By default, the messenger saves all incoming files to the folder /Telegram/Telegram Images (or Telegram Documents). Over a year of active use, unnecessary data may accumulate here. 3–10 GB unnecessary data.

To delete them:

  1. Open any file manager (for example, Files by Google or Total Commander).
  2. Go to the folder Internal Storage → Telegram.
  3. Sort files by size (tap on three dots → Sort → By size).
  4. Delete large files that are not needed (for example, memes, duplicates, old screenshots).

3. Usage

Telegram has a built-in tool Storage Usage (Memory Usage), which shows which chats and files take up the most space. This the most accurate way find and delete unnecessary data without the risk of losing important ones.

Instructions:

  • 🔧 Open Telegram and tap on three lines (☰) → Settings.
  • 📊 Select Data and memory → Memory usage.
  • 🔍 Wait for analysis (may take 1-2 minutes).
  • 🗑️ Sort chats by size and delete unnecessary files (tap on chat → select files → Delete).

⚠️ Attention: Function Storage Usage shows only those files that already downloaded to the device. If you enabled the option Save to gallery, media files may be duplicated in the folder. Gallery, and in the folder Telegram —they will have to be deleted separately.

How to speed up Storage Usage analysis?

If the analysis freezes at the "Scanning..." stage, close Telegram via Recent applications and start again. Clearing the messenger cache will also help (see section 1).

4. deleting media

To prevent Telegram from filling up memory in the future, set automatic deletion of media files after a certain time. This is especially useful for active users of channels and large chats, where dozens of photos and videos are received daily.

How to enable:

  1. Go to Settings → Data and memory.
  2. Tap on Auto delete media.

Important: automatic deletion only works for files downloaded after enabling the function. Old media will have to be cleaned manually.

5. Optimizing media loading

  • 📸 Settings → Data and memory → Photo quality: select Low or Medium.

6. Clearing chat history and service data

In addition to media files, Telegram stores message history, error logs and service datawhich also take up space. They can be cleared without losing the functionality of the messenger.

Methods of cleaning:

  • 🗑️ Deleting chat history: Press your finger on the chat → Delete chat (messages will remain with the interlocutor). For mass deletion, use Settings → Privacy → Clear history.
  • 🧹 Clearing service logs: Go to Settings → Advanced → Clear Telegram data (not available in all versions).
  • 🔄 Reset settings: V Settings → Advanced → Reset settings (does not delete chats, only returns settings to factory settings).

💡 Useful advice: If you need to free up a lot of space, but it’s a shame to lose history, export chats before deleting. To do this: tap on the chat → three dots → Export history → select the format (JSON or TXT). The file will be saved in the folder Downloads.

7. Transferring Telegram to a memory card (for supported devices)

If your Androidsmartphone supports microSD, you can transfer part of the Telegram data to a memory card. This is relevant for devices with small amount of built-in memory (16–32 GB).

How to transfer:

  1. Insert microSD into your smartphone and format it how Internal memory (settings → memory → three dots → Memory settings).
  2. Download a file manager with support root-access (for example, FX File Explorer).
  3. Move the folder /Telegram to the memory card (superuser rights are required).
  4. Create a symbolic link (symlink) from the original path to the new one:

⚠️ Attention: Move to microSD can slow down Telegramif the memory card is class Class 4 or lower. For normal speed, use cards Class 10 or UHS-I.
