Losing important photos, contacts or settings after resetting your smartphone is a stressful situation familiar to many users. Fortunately, the modern ecosystem Android provides several levels of data protection, but finding them is not always intuitive. Backup copy can be stored both in the cloud storage of a linked account, and in the internal memory of the device, the existence of which you might not even suspect.
In this article we will analyze in detail all possible locations where the system or third-party applications could save your data. You will learn how to check the synchronization status in Google Account, find hidden folders through the file manager and understand the difference between a system backup and copies from manufacturers like Samsung or Xiaomi. Understanding the storage architecture will help you quickly return information to its place.
Before you start searching, it is important to determine what type of data you are interested in: contacts, messages, photos or a complete system image. The choice of search tool depends on this. Sometimes it is enough just to log into your profile, but in other cases you will need to connect to a computer and use special utilities to extract files from system partitions.
Search for cloud backups in Google Account
The most common and reliable way to store data on devices with an operating system Android is Google services. By default, the system automatically creates backups settings, application lists, call history and SMS messages. To check the availability of such data, you need to go to the phone settings and open the section dedicated to your profile.
The path to this information may differ slightly depending on the version of the shell, but the general algorithm is the same. find menu Settings → Google → Backup. This is where the date of the last successful save is displayed and a list of data that will be restored when you first set up a new device or after a factory reset of the current one.
Please note that for this function to work, the device must be connected to a Wi-Fi network and charged, unless you have changed the settings to use mobile data. Google Drive allocates separate space for these needs, which does not take up your main 15 GB quota, but detailed reports about the content are often hidden from direct viewing in the Drive app interface.
If you see an old date in the backup menu, click the "Start Backup" button manually to update the archive before resetting settings.
It is important to understand that recovery from the Google cloud occurs only during the initial system setup (Master Setup). If the phone is already set up and you are logged into your account, you won’t be able to simply “press the restore button” in the settings menu - you will have to perform a full data reset.
Local storage: search for files in internal memory
Many users do not know that their smartphones create local copies of data directly in the internal memory. These files often remain intact even after some applications are uninstalled, but may be erased during a Factory Reset. To find them, you will need a file manager, for example Files by Google or the manufacturer's built-in explorer.
The main directory where you should look for traces of automatic saving is usually called Backup or Backups. It can be located either in the root of the internal drive or inside the folders of specific applications. For example, instant messengers often create their own subdirectories to store correspondence history before reinstallation.
- 📁 Folder
/Internal Storage/Android/data/— caches and data of many installed apps are stored here, including temporary copies. - 📁 Directory
/Internal Storage/DCIM/.thumbnails— may contain thumbnails of deleted photo, if the main gallery was cleared incorrectly. - 📁 System folder
/Internal Storage/system_backup/— found on devices of some brands for storing local firmware images.
When searching manually, pay attention to files with the extension .ab (Android Backup) or .tar. These are containers that contain packed data. You won’t be able to open them with a simple text editor; you will need special utilities on your PC, such as Android Backup Extractor.
How to open a .ab file on a computer?
Files with the .ab extension are encrypted containers. To unpack them on a PC, you will need the Android Backup Extractor utility and Java installed. The unpacking command looks like this: java -jar abe.jar unpack backup.ab backup.tar. After this, you will receive an archive that can be opened with any archiver.
It is worth remembering that the file system structure in new versions Android (starting from version 11) has become more closed. Access to the folder Android/data for third-party applications may be limited, so for a full scan it is better to use the built-in explorer or connect the phone to the computer in file transfer mode (MTP).
Branded clouds of smartphone manufacturers
Owners of devices from large vendors often have access to additional backup tools that work in parallel with Google services. Companies Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and others are developing their own ecosystems that allow them to save deeper system settings, including the location of icons on the desktop and specific interface parameters.
On smartphones Samsung the key role is played by the service Samsung Cloudintegrated with Microsoft OneDrive. To find your data there, you need to go to settings, select “Accounts and Backup” and then “Samsung Cloud”. Copies of contacts, calendar, notes, and even home screen settings are stored here.
Devices Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco use the service Mi Cloud. The backup location is in the menu Settings → Mi Account → Xiaomi Cloud → Backups. A feature of this system is the ability to create complete system images that can be deployed even without Internet access if the file is saved locally.
| Manufacturer | Service name | What is copied | Free space limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Samsung Cloud / OneDrive | Contacts, messages, screen settings, call log | 5 GB (via OneDrive) |
| Xiaomi | Mi Cloud | Full system backup, gallery, voice recorder | 5 GB |
| Huawei | Huawei Cloud | Contacts, notes, voice recorder | 5 GB |
| Google (Pixel) | Google One | Application data, SMS, MMS, settings | 15 GB (shared with mail) |
Usage branded clouds are convenient because recovery occurs as seamlessly as possible for the user. However, it is worth considering that when changing the smartphone brand (for example, switching from Samsung to Xiaomi), it may be impossible to restore data from the native cloud of the old device through the standard means of the new phone.
Recovering data from messengers
Messengers deserve special attention, as they often ignore system-wide settings backups and use their own mechanisms. The most popular example is WhatsApp i Telegram. If you do not configure them correctly, correspondence may be lost forever, even if there is a shared copy of the system.
Backup copies can be stored locally in a folder WhatsApp backups can be stored locally in a folder /Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases or in the cloud Google Drive. When you reinstall the application, it automatically scans these locations. It is critical that the same phone number and the same Google account are used for recovery as when creating the copy.
Messenger Telegram works differently: the entire correspondence history is stored on their servers in the cloud. You don't need to search for files on your phone - just enter your username and password. The exception is “Secret Chats”, which are not saved in the cloud and are tied to a specific device. When you reset your phone, data from secret chats is permanently deleted.
⚠️ Attention: Local messenger databases are often encrypted with a key stored in the system partition of the phone. When resetting to factory settings (Factory Reset), this key is deleted, and even if you copy the database file
msgstore.db.cryptto your computer, it will be impossible to decrypt it without root access and the old key.
For users Viber the situation is similar to WhatsApp: you need a copy on Google Drive or local storage. In the application settings there is a section "Account" → "Viber Backup", where you can see the date of the last backup and initiate a new save manually before important manipulations with the phone.
Using a computer to search and save
Connecting a smartphone to a personal computer via a USB cable allows access to the file system in storage mode. This is one of the most reliable ways to find backups created by third-party applications or manually save important documents before resetting.
After connecting and selecting File Transfer (MTP) mode in your phone notifications, you will see the internal storage on the computer screen. Here it is worth paying attention to hidden folders (in Windows you need to enable the display of hidden items), since some apps hide their backups there.
☑️ Checking the connection to the PC
Specialized software, such as Android Debug Bridge (ADB), allows you to take complete snapshots of the system that are not available through a regular explorer. This requires enabling USB debugging in the Developer options menu. The command adb backup -all -f backup.ab creates a universal backup file, which can then be analyzed.
adb devices
adb backup -apk -shared -all -system -f C:\backup\full_backup.ab
This method creates the most complete copy, including application data and system settings. However, the process can take considerable time, and on some modern devices this function may be limited by firmware developers for security reasons.
What to do if the backup is not found
The situation when a fresh backup is not found either in the cloud or in the phone’s memory is not uncommon. This could happen due to a synchronization failure, storage full, or the user accidentally disabling the feature. In this case, you should not panic, but you need to act quickly so as not to overwrite the deleted data with new ones.
First of all, stop actively using your smartphone: do not install new applications, do not take photos or download files. The fewer write operations occur with memory, the higher the chances of successfully recovering deleted information using specialized software.
There are apps for data recovery, such as Dr.Fone, DiskDigger or EaseUS MobiSaver. They scan the internal memory for residual files. The effectiveness of such utilities highly depends on the availability root access: without them, most apps will only be able to recover cached photo thumbnails or long-deleted files that have not yet been erased.
⚠️ Attention: Settings interfaces and menu item names may differ depending on the version of Android and the manufacturer's shell (MIUI, OneUI, ColorOS). If you cannot find the specified path, use the search in the phone settings by entering the word “Backup” or “Restore”.
The absence of a visible backup copy does not always mean data loss - check the trash in the Gallery and Google Photos, as well as the archive in the email client.
As a last resort, if the data is critical and software methods do not help, You should contact a specialized service center. Professional recovery from a memory dump is an expensive procedure, but it may be the only chance to recover information from a physically healthy but logically damaged drive.
Where exactly in Google Drive is the phone backup located?
Android system data backups do not appear in the regular Google Drive file grid. To see them, go to drive.google.com on your computer, click on the settings cog and select "Manage applications." In the list, find “Android Backup” - it will indicate the size and date of the last copy, as well as the delete option.
Is it possible to restore a backup from Android to iPhone?
Directly restoring the Android system backup to iPhone is impossible due to the different architecture of operating systems. However, individual data (contacts, calendar, photos) can be transferred by synchronizing them through common services, such as a Google account or intermediary applications like "Move to iOS" when setting up the iPhone for the first time.
How long is a Google backup stored?
Google does not automatically delete backups if they are active. However, if you don't sign in to your Google Account on the device from which the copy was created within 57 days, it may be deleted. Copies are also deleted if you reset your phone and do not restore the data within a certain period.
How to find out what exactly is included in the backup?
The exact list of files inside the system copy cannot be seen without unpacking it on a PC. But the menu Settings → Google → Backup displays a list of data types: application data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS. Photos and videos are usually backed up separately through Google Photos.
Does backup take up space in your Google One plan?
Backups of system settings and app data (created through the standard Android mechanism) do not take up space in your quota 15 GB. However, high-quality backups of photos and videos in Google Photos, as well as files on Google Drive, count towards the total storage limit.
