The transition to a new brand smartphone Honor is often accompanied by the need to migrate user data, and the most critical element here is the phone book. Many users, out of habit, store numbers directly on plastic media - SIM card, which was the standard in the era of push-button phones, but on modern Android devices this method is considered archaic and unsafe. SIM card memory is extremely limited, often truncates long names to 10-12 characters and does not allow saving additional fields such as email or address.
The operating system Androidon which Honor smartphones are based has a built-in import mechanism that allows you to quickly copy all entries to the internal device memory or cloud storage. This process only takes a few minutes, but requires care in choosing the source and destination of the data to avoid creating duplicates or losing information. Below we will analyze in detail the algorithm of actions for different versions of the shell MagicOS and EMUI.
Preparing the device and checking the data source
Before starting the copying procedure, you need to make sure that the physical SIM card is correctly detected by the system. Insert the media into the appropriate slot and wait for the network icons to appear in the status bar. If you have a device with two SIM cards, please note that import is only possible from the one that actually stores the numbers. Go to the application Contact and check the display of records.
Sometimes users confuse data storage: numbers may already be saved in the account Google or Honor Cloud, and not on the SIM card. To check, open the list display settings. Click on the three dots in the corner of the screen or the filter icon and make sure that “All contacts” or your specific SIM card is selected. If the list is empty when the SIM card is selected, it means that the data is actually on the media and is ready for transfer.
It is important to understand the difference between storage formats. The SIM card uses an outdated standard that does not fully support the Cyrillic alphabet or special characters in some regions. When transferred to internal memory phone, these restrictions are removed. However, before starting a bulk import, it is recommended to create a backup copy of your current phone book, even if it appears empty, so that you have a fallback point in case of failure.
⚠️ Attention: The import process is a one-way copy. After the transfer, the data will remain both on the SIM card and in the phone memory. Deleting entries from the SIM card after the procedure will not affect the safety of the numbers in the smartphone, but will free up space on the media.
Before importing, make sure that the smartphone battery charge is at least 20% so that the device does not turn off at the critical moment of data recording.
Algorithm for importing contacts through the standard application
The main method of data transfer is implemented directly in the interface of the Contacts application, which is preinstalled on all smartphones Honor. The interface may differ slightly depending on the software version, but the logic of actions remains the same. You will need to find the contact management menu, which is usually hidden behind an icon with three dots or horizontal lines.
The sequence of actions is as follows:
- 📱 Open the application
Contacton the main screen or in the application menu. - ⚙️ Tap on the menu icon (three dots or four squares) in the upper or lower right corner of the screen.
- 📥 Select item
Manage contactsorImport/Export contacts. - 💾 Click on the button
Import from SIM card.
After selecting the source, the system will prompt you to specify the destination. It is critical to choose the right option here. Typically the available options are “Phone”, “Google Account” or “Honor Account”. Selecting the option Phone will save the data locally, which is convenient if there is no Internet, but risky if the device is lost. Selecting an account will ensure automatic synchronization and data protection.
A list of all found numbers will appear on the screen. You can check only the entries you need, or use the Select All feature in the top corner. After confirming your selection, the copying process will begin. The speed of the operation depends on the number of entries: for 500 numbers it can take from 10 to 30 seconds. Once complete, you will see a notification that the import was successful.

Working with VCF files and alternative methods
Sometimes standard import does not work correctly, especially if the SIM card was cut out manually or has damage to the pad. In such cases, you can use the intermediate format VCF (vCard). This method involves first exporting data from the SIM card to a file, and then importing it into the phone book. This approach gives more control over the process and allows you to edit data before saving.
To implement this method, go to the contact management menu and select Export to SIM card (if available) or go straight to export to a file. However, since our goal is to pick up data s SIM cards, we use the import function and then save it to a file. Some versions of shells allow you to immediately select the “Copy to phone” option, which is analogous to import.
If you have access to another phone where contacts are displayed correctly, you can export them there to a file .vcf, transfer it to Honor via Bluetooth or messenger and open it. The system will automatically offer to add found entries to the phone book. This is a universal method that works regardless of the state of the SIM card slot in the new device.
What to do if the import freezes?
If the import process freezes in the middle, try rebooting your smartphone in safe mode. To do this, hold down the power button, and then long press the “Power Off” icon on the screen until you are prompted to enter safe mode. In this mode, third-party applications do not interfere with the operation of the system.
Synchronization with Google and Honor cloud services
A modern approach to managing contact data involves abandoning local storage in favor of cloud services. Smartphones are deeply integrated with the ecosystem, and also offer their own service. Transferring numbers to a Google account is the most reliable way to protect against data loss when changing devices or resetting settings. Honor deeply integrated with the ecosystem Google, and also offer their own service Honor Cloud. Transferring numbers to a Google account is the most reliable way to protect against data loss when changing a device or resetting settings.
To set up automatic synchronization after importing from a SIM card, follow these steps:
- ☁️ Open
Settingssmartphone and find the sectionUsers and accounts. - 📧 Select your account Google from the list.
- 🔄 Make sure that the switch opposite the item
Contactis active (highlighted in blue). - 🆙 Click on the three dots in the corner and select
Synchronizeto force an update.
Using the cloud allows you to edit contacts from any device: tablet, computer or other phone. All changes are instantly reflected in all gadgets linked to one account. In addition, Google Contacts has advanced tools for merging duplicates and restoring deleted entries for the last 30 days, which is impossible when stored on a SIM card.
| Storage location | Record limit | Data availability | Risk losses |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIM card | 250-500 pcs. | Only in a phone with a card | High (if the card breaks) |
| Memory phone | Unlimited | Only on this device | Medium (when resetting settings) |
| Google Account | Unlimited | For all devices and on the web | Minimum |
| Honor Cloud | Depends on the tariff | On Honor/Huawei devices | Minimum |
⚠️ Attention: Terms of provision of cloud repositories can be changed by service developers. It is recommended to periodically check the synchronization status in your account's personal account to ensure that the data is actually uploaded to the server.
Storing contacts in a Google cloud account is the only way to guarantee their safety in case of complete loss or theft of a physical device.
Solving problems with duplicates and name encoding
A frequent problem after transferring data from a SIM card is the appearance of duplicate entries. This happens if you previously saved some numbers to your phone or cloud, and now imported them again from the SIM card. The system may treat the same entry as different contacts if the number formats are different (for example, +7 and 8). The Contacts app on Honor has a built-in tool to solve this problem.
To merge entries, go to the control menu and select Merge duplicates. The system will offer an automatic search for matches by name and phone number. You can view the proposed pairings and confirm the merger. This will clean up your phone book and make it neat. It is also worth checking the encoding of names: if question marks or hieroglyphs are displayed instead of Russian letters, you will need to manually edit such contacts.
Sometimes after importing numbers are displayed without a country code, which can lead to problems with number identification when calling from roaming or instant messengers. It is recommended to convert all numbers to the international format. To massively change the format, you can use third-party applications from the store Google Play, specializing in cleaning contacts, or edit them through the Google Contacts web interface on a computer, where this is more convenient.
Cleaning the SIM card after a successful transfer
After you have made sure that all the numbers are displayed correctly in the smartphone’s memory or in the cloud, a logical question arises: do you need to clear the SIM card? Technically, this is not necessary, since data duplication does not affect the operation of the network. However, clearing the SIM card frees up its resource and eliminates confusion in the future when you insert this card into another phone.
To delete numbers from the media, return to the contact management menu and select the option Delete contacts from the SIM card. Be extremely careful when choosing the deletion source: make sure that you select deletion from the SIM card, and not from the phone’s memory or account. Confirm the action. After this operation, the SIM card will be “clean” and will be ready for use in any device without the risk of mixing old entries with new ones.
If you plan to use this SIM card as a backup or in another phone, cleaning it is a good digital hygiene practice. This prevents the situation when, when making a call from a new device, the subscriber sees the old contact name saved on the recipient’s SIM card, instead of the current one.
Why did contact photos disappear after the transfer?
SIM cards do not support storing images. If your contacts had avatars, they were stored either in the phone memory or in your account. When importing only text data from a SIM card, photos are not transferred automatically, since they simply are not on the storage device. You will need to add photos manually or wait for synchronization if they were in the cloud.
Is it possible to transfer contacts if the phone screen is broken?
If the sensor does not work, but there is an image, connect a USB mouse via an OTG adapter. This will allow you to manage the interface and perform the import. If the screen is completely black, but the phone works, try using the Google voice assistant or connecting to the computer via USB debugging, if it was enabled previously.
How many maximum contacts can a modern SIM card hold?
The standard capacity of modern SIM cards (USIM) is about 250 entries. Some newer cards can hold up to 500 numbers, but that's the limit. In contrast, a smartphone can store tens of thousands of contacts, limited only by the amount of internal memory, which is almost unlimited for text data.
What to do if the phone does not see the SIM card?
Try to remove the tray and wipe the SIM card contacts with a soft eraser or alcohol wipe. Make sure that the card is inserted the correct way (the key cut must coincide with the outline of the tray). If the problem is not solved, check the operation of the card in another phone - it may be physically damaged.
