Why you can’t just synchronize WhatsApp between iOS and Android

The main reason is different backup formats. On iPhone a backup is created in .iclouddrive or .zip (via iTunes), and on Android - in .crypt14 (encrypted format WhatsApp). Even if you download the archive from iCloud, the messenger on Android does not recognize it.

Preparation for transfer: what needs to be done BEFORE you start

Before you start synchronizing, do required steps on both devices. This will save time and prevent data loss:

  1. Update WhatsApp to iPhone to the latest version (check in App Store).
  2. Create a fresh backup in iCloud:
    • Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chat → Chat backup.
    • Click Create a copy and wait for completion (check that iCloud Drive enough space).
  • Connect a new Android to Wi-Fi and make sure there is enough space for backup (10 GB chat history will take ~15 GB on the device).

    3. When you first start Android select Copy data from iPhone (yes, even if you transfer in the opposite direction).
    4. On iPhone open Move to iOS, enter the code from Android and select WhatsApp in the list of data to transfer.
    5. Wait for completion (may take up to 1 hour per 10 GB data). Do not interrupt the process!

    This method the most reliable, but has critical disadvantages:

    If you have a smartphone Samsung (series Galaxy S22/S23/S24, Note 20, Z Fold/Flip and newer), you can use the proprietary utility Smart Switch. Unlike Move to iOS, it does not require resetting the device, but only works on selected models.

    Step-by-step guide:

    1. Download Smart Switch on iPhone from App Store and to Samsung from Galaxy Store.
    2. Connect your phones via cable (Lightning-to-USB-C or adapter).
    3. On Samsung select Get data → iPhone/iPad.
    4. On iPhone allow access to data and select WhatsApp on list.
    5. Wait for the transfer to complete (may take up to 30 minutes for 5 GB of data).

    What is being transferred:

    • ✅ Messages (including those deleted for yourself).
    • ✅ Photos, videos, voice messages.
    • ✅ Information about groups (names, participants).
    What is NOT transferred:

    If you only need to transfer individual chats (for example, correspondence with clients or important documents), you can use the built-in export WhatsApp. This method does not save media and history, but it works without additional apps.

    How to export a chat:

    1. Open the desired chat on iPhone.
    2. Tap on the contact name → Export chat.
    3. Select Without media (with media the file will be too large).
    4. Send the file to your email or to Telegram.
    5. On Android open the file and copy the text to a new chat.

    • 📅 Message dates will be saved, but the time may be wrong.

    If you have already activated WhatsApp on Android with the same number, the official methods will not work. In this case, it will help workaround by temporarily changing the number:

    Action algorithm:

    1. On iPhone:
      • Change the number on WhatsApp to a temporary one (for example, virtual via Google Voice).
      • Create a fresh backup in iCloud.
    2. On Android:
      • Delete WhatsApp.
      • Install it again, but when registering, indicate old number (not temporary!).
      • When prompted to restore data, select Skip.
  • Use iMazing or Dr.Fone to transfer data from iPhone to Android (as in section 4).
  • Return the old number in WhatsApp settings to Android.
