How to open an ARK file on Android: a step-by-step guide with applications and tips

Files with the extension .ARK are not the most common format on Android, but they still occur. Most often these are archives created in specialized apps for Windows, or game files from Ark: Survival Evolved. If you downloaded such a file to your phone, but don’t know how to open it, this article will help you figure it out.

The problem is that standard Android tools do not support ARK-format. Even popular archivers like RAR or ZArchiver may not cope. You will have to use workarounds: from installing specialized applications to converting the file to a more universal format. We tested all working methods and collected them in one guide - with step-by-step guide, warnings and alternatives.

What is an ARK file and why does it not open on Android

The extension .ARK can refer to two types of files:

• 📦 Archivescreated by apps ARK (an outdated format, popular in the 2000s) or FreeArc (modern archiver with a high degree of compression).
• 🎮 Game files from Ark: Survival Evolved (mods, saves, maps).

Android does not recognize this default format because:

1. Google does not include support for rare archives in the standard library libarchive.
2. Game files require specific parsers, which are only available in launchers ARK-files require specific parsers, which are only available in launchers Ark or Steam.
3. Many archivers for Android (for example, WinZip or 7Z) are ignored ARK as "unknown format".

Another cause of problems is file corruption. If the archive has not been downloaded completely or has been interrupted, even specialized software will not be able to unpack it. 1. Download ArcBrowser from Google Play.
2. Open the application and find your file .ARK in the list.
3. Tap on the file - if it is an archive, a button will appear Extract (Extract).
4. Select the folder to unpack and wait for completion.

If ArcBrowser didn’t work, try ZArchiver with the plugin:

• 🔧 Install ZArchiver and open it.
• 📥 In the menu, select Plugins → Download plugin for FreeArc.
• 🔄 Restart the application and try to open the file again.

Check the extension (should be .ARK, not .ARK.001)

Method 2: Convert ARK to ZIP on a PC (if Android fails)

If no archiver works on phone did not recognize the file, you can convert it to ZIP via a computer. This is a universal format that will open any Android application. You will need:

• 💻 Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux.
• 📁 app FreeArc (official archiver) or PeaZip.
• 📱 USB cable or cloud storage to transfer the file back to the phone.

Instructions for PeaZip:

1. Download and install PeaZip from the official website.
2. Connect your phone to the PC and copy the file .ARK to any folder.
3. Open PeaZip, find the file and select Extract.
4. In the menu Format specify ZIP and click OK.
5. Move the received ZIParchive back to your phone.

If PeaZip does not recognize ARK, try FreeArc with the command line:

⚠️ Attention: Some ARKarchives use non-standard compression that is not even supported by FreeArc. In this case, only the app that created the archive will help (for example, ARK Backup for backups).

Method 3: Opening ARK game files (for Ark: Survival Evolved)

If your file .ARK is associated with a game Ark: Survival Evolved, on Android you can open it only in two ways:

1. Through a PC emulator (for example, ExaGear or Wine), but this requires a powerful device and manual settings.
2. Using the mobile version of the game (if the file is a mod or save).

For mods:

• 📱 Install Ark: Survival Evolved Mobile from Google Play.
• 📁 Downloaded .ARK-file (for example, a mod for dinosaurs) to the folder:

For saves:

Method 5: Alternative methods (for advanced users)

If the standard methods did not work, you can try:

  This requires knowledge of Linux and superuser rights (root).

• 🔄 Renaming the extension: sometimes .ARK is a renamed .ZIP or .RAR. Try renaming the file to file.zip and open with a standard archiver.

  • If the first bytes are 50 4B 03 04, this ZIP.

  After determining the format, rename the file to the appropriate extension.

2. Find file .ARK, hold your finger on it and select View as → Hex.

⚠️ Attention: Changing the file extension does not change its real format! If after renaming the archiver gives an error, the file is really in the ARKformat, and specialized tools are needed.
