Smartphone personalization has long ceased to be just a fashionable trend, having turned into a necessary element of ease of use. When the device sits on a table in a common room or office, it's the unique sound that helps you instantly understand which application needs your attention. Standard system sounds often merge into a monotonous stream of notifications, which is why important messages from loved ones can go unnoticed among spam and news.
Messenger Viber is one of the most popular communication tools, but many users use the default settings for months, not even knowing about the flexible customization options. Changing the audio file for an incoming call or a specific contact is not a complicated procedure, but it does require an understanding of the menu structure and access rights to the file system. In this article, we will analyze in detail all the stages of setting up individual sound for your messenger.
It is worth noting that the application interface may differ slightly depending on the version of the operating system Android and the specific model of your smartphone. Shell manufacturers, such as MIUI, OneUI or ColorOS, sometimes make their own adjustments to the display of menu items. However, the operating logic remains the same for the entire ecosystem, and following our instructions, you can easily find the options you need.
Preparing audio files and format requirements
Before you begin setting up inside the application, you need to make sure that you have a suitable audio file. Not every music track can be used as a system ringtone. The optimal format is considered MP3, since it is supported by the vast majority of devices without the need for conversion. WAV or OGGformats are also acceptable, but they take up more space or may not display correctly in some Android builds.
The duration of the melody plays a critical role. A track that is too long may be cut off by the system, while a track that is too short may loop or sound unnatural. The ideal call length is between 15 and 30 seconds. If you have downloaded the full composition, it is advisable to first edit it in any audio editor, cutting out the most recognizable and dynamic fragment.
⚠️ Attention: Files protected by copyright and downloaded from streaming services in encrypted form (for example, Spotify or Yandex.Music cache) will not work as ringtones. Use only files stored in the open memory of the device.
File placement also matters. In order for the system and application to easily find the melody, it is recommended to place it in the root folder Music or a specially created directory Ringtones in the internal storage. Some launchers automatically scan these folders and add the contents to the general list of available sounds.
Use free ringtone applications from Google Play to quickly cut MP3s directly on your phone without connecting to a computer.
Global sound settings for all incoming calls
The most common scenario is to set a single ringtones for all calls coming through Viber. This action will replace the app's default sound with the track you select. To get started, open the messenger and go to the main menu by clicking on the three horizontal bars or the “More” icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
In the list that opens, you need to find the item Settings. The interface may vary, but the gear icon is usually at the very bottom or top of the list depending on the version. After going to the settings section, scroll the screen to the “Calls” block. All parameters related to audio communication are concentrated here.
Click on the item Ring Sound. A system melody selection window will open, which may look different on different smartphones. You'll see a list of preinstalled Android sounds and possibly files you've already added. Scroll to the end of the list and select the "Add" option or the "plus" icon to open the file manager.
- 🎵 Select the downloaded MP3 file from the list of system suggestions.
- 📂 If the file is not in the list, use Explorer to search the folder.
DownloadsorMusic. - ✅ Confirm your selection by clicking “OK” or “Done” in the upper right corner.
After confirmation, the system will save the changes. Now, with any incoming call via Viber this particular file will be played. It is important to check the volume as media and ringer settings may vary. Make sure that the ringer volume slider in your phone settings is not at minimum.
Individual settings for specific contacts
One of the most useful features of the messenger is the ability to assign a unique melody for a specific person. This allows you to understand exactly who is calling you without looking at the screen. This setting overrides the global settings for the selected subscriber.
To begin, open a chat with the desired contact or find it in the general contact list inside the application. Tap the person's name at the top of the screen to go to their profile. In the user profile, find the button Notification settings or bell icon. In some versions, this item is hidden under a menu of three dots in the upper right corner of the profile.
Activate the switch Custom notificationsif it is disabled. After activation, sound settings specifically for this person will become available. Click on “Ring Sound” and select the desired song from the list. The selection process is similar to the global setting: you can choose the system sound or upload your own file.
⚠️ Attention: If you don't see the custom settings option, make sure the contact is saved in your device's phone book, and not just inside the messenger. Contact synchronization is required for this function.
It is worth remembering that individual settings are only valid while the corresponding toggle switch is activated. If you decide to return everything as it was, just disable the “Individual notifications” function, and the contact will use the general application ringtone again.

Setting sounds for group chats
Group chats in Viber can be a source of constant noise if there is active discussion. In order not to miss an important message from colleagues or family, but at the same time distinguish it from personal calls, you can set up a separate sound for the group.
Go to the desired group chat and click on the group name in the screen header. In the group information menu, find the section Sound and vibration. Here you can turn off the sound altogether if the group is not a priority, or assign a specific signal. Selecting a melody for a group works on the same principle as for personal contacts.
An interesting feature is the ability to configure the sound only for mentions. If there are a lot of messages in the group, but only those with your name concern you, activate the “Sound only when mentioned” option. This will help maintain concentration and nerves by filtering information noise.
| Setting type | Priority | Where is located | Affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global call | Low | Application settings | All incoming calls |
| Individual contact | High | Contact profile | Only selected person |
| Group chat | Medium | Group information | Members of a specific group |
| Android system sound | Highest | Phone settings | All applications (unless overridden) |
The hierarchy of settings works as follows: if an individual sound is set for a contact, it will be played instead of the general one. If there is no individual sound, the general sound of the application will work. If it is not set, the system uses the standard Android sound for notifications.
Individual settings always take precedence over general application settings, allowing you to flexibly manage audio for different interlocutors.
Solving problems with sound and notifications
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where, despite all the settings, the phone is silent or plays the wrong melody. Most often, the problem lies not in the application itself, but in Android system restrictions or energy saving settings.
The first thing you need to check is the Do Not Disturb mode. In this mode, all sounds except calls from favorite contacts can be muted. Check the mode settings in the notification shade or in the system menu Sound and vibration. Make sure Viber is added to the exceptions for this mode.
The second common reason is aggressive energy conservation. Modern Android shells tend to “kill” background processes to save battery, which is why the application cannot play sound in time. Go to the phone settings, section Applications → Viber → Batterie and select the “No restrictions” or “Do not optimize” mode.
⚠️ Attention: The energy saving settings interface is very different on smartphones of different brands. If you cannot find the item you need, use the search in your phone settings by entering the word “Battery” or “Optimization.”
Also check your access rights. The app needs access to storage (files) to read your custom ringtones. If you recently updated your system or reset your settings, your rights may have been revoked. You can get them in the section Applications → Viber → Permissions.
What to do if there is sound, but no vibration?
Check the separate vibration slider in the Viber call settings. Also make sure that vibration for incoming calls is turned on in your system audio settings. Some phones have a physical vibration mode switch on the case.
Features of working on different versions of Android
The Android ecosystem is heterogeneous, and manufacturers make their own changes to work with sounds. On “pure” Android (Pixel, Motorola smartphones), the selection of a melody occurs through a standard system picker, which automatically pulls up files from the media folder.
On devices with a shell MIUI (Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO) there is often a problem with displaying custom ringtones in the list. The solution is to copy the file not just to the Music folder, but to a hidden system folder MIUI/ringtone, or use a theme that allows you to change sounds.
Owners of smartphones Samsung with shell OneUI may encounter the fact that the application only offers sounds from the Samsung proprietary library. In this case, you need to use a third-party file manager to navigate to the desired track when selecting a sound in the Viber settings menu.
On older versions of Android (below 8.0), notification management was less flexible. There, sound settings were often tied to the notification type globally, and there could be no division into notification channels (calls, messages, groups). In such cases, the change in ringtone was applied to all application events at once.
If you updated your phone to a new version of Android and the sound settings were reset, this is normal security behavior. Just repeat the procedure for selecting a melody; new versions often require re-confirming file permissions.
Why does the standard sound play after selecting a melody?
Most often this happens because the melody file has been moved or deleted from the phone's memory. Make sure the file is in internal storage and not on an SD card that may have become disconnected. Also check if “Default sound for all applications” is checked in your phone’s sound settings, which may override the settings inside Viber.
Is it possible to set a voice message as a call?
Yes, it is possible. Record a voice message, send it to yourself in the My Notes chat, or save the voice recorder file to your music folder. The main thing is that the file has a supported format (MP3, WAV). Then select it through the file manager in the Viber call settings as a regular audio file.
How to return the factory Viber ringtone?
Go to the call settings (global or for a contact) and select “Default” or “Viber default” in the list of ringtones. It is usually at the very top of the list of system sounds. This will reset the setting to the developer's original ringtone.
Does Silent mode affect the ringtone settings?
Yes, if the phone is switched to complete silence or vibration mode through physical buttons or the curtain, the selected melody will not be played, regardless of its quality and settings within the application. The “Silent” mode has the highest priority over any software settings for ringtones.
Why does the melody stop in the middle?
This may be due to the fact that the file is too long, and the system cuts it according to the limit, or due to the low quality of the file itself (bitrate). Try using a track shorter than 30 seconds and make sure that it is encoded in standard MP3 with a bitrate of at least 128 kbps.
