What to do if AirPods do not connect to an Android phone: step-by-step guide

Have you taken them out of the case AirPods, turned on Bluetooth on your smartphone, but the headphones stubbornly refuse to connect? The problem is familiar to many owners of Androiddevices - despite the universality of the protocol Bluetooth, Apple optimizes their gadgets primarily for the ecosystem iOS. However, this does not mean that connection is impossible. In 90% of cases, the problem is solved in 5–10 minutes using standard methods that do not require special knowledge.

In this article we will look at why all possible reasons, according to which AirPods (including models Pro, 2/3 generations and Max) may not connect to your phone Android —from basic user errors to rare software glitches. You will learn how to reset your headphones, update their firmware without iPhone, and what to do if the problem lies in the smartphone itself. Before moving on to complex manipulations, check the obvious: are they charged? headphones (the indicator on the case should be lit green or orange), whether Bluetooth is turned on on the phone, and whether AirPods is currently connected to another device (for example, to MacBook or iPad). If everything is in order, read on.

1. Basic checks: 5 steps before setup

Start with basic steps that are often overlooked. These steps take no more than a minute, but can save you hours of searching for a solution.

• 🔋 Check the charge of the case and headphones. If the indicator on the case does not light up at all, connect it to the charger for 10–15 minutes. AirPods will not be visible in the list of devices if the charge level is below 5%.
• 📱 Reboot the smartphone. Sometimes Bluetooth module freezes due to background processes. A simple reboot will reset its state.
• 🎧 Remove and insert the headphones back into the case. This will forcefully restart them Bluetooth connection.
• 🔄 Turn on/off Bluetooth on your phone. Sometimes it is enough to turn off the module for 10 seconds and activate it again.
• 🚫 Make sure that the headphones are not connected to another device. AirPods can automatically connect with the last used gadget (for example, with iPhone a friend if you let him listen to music).

If after these steps AirPods still are not displayed in the list of available devices, proceed to the next section. Pay special attention to the point about charging: even if the case indicator is green, the headphones themselves may have discharged during storage - try keeping them in the case 1-2 minutes with the lid closed.

2. Resetting AirPods: a universal method

The most reliable method to return AirPods to factory settings is hard reset. This will delete all saved connections and return the headphones to "out of the box" condition. The procedure is the same for all models, including Pro and Max.

Reset instructions:

1. Put both headphones in the case and close the lid.
2. Wait 30 seconds, then open the cover.
3. On the back of the case, find the settings button (it is located under the cover, closer to the bottom edge).
4. Press the button until the indicator inside the case begins to blink 15 secondsuntil the indicator inside the case starts flashing orangeand then will turn white.
5. Close the cover and wait 1 minute.

After the reset, try connecting again:

1. Open the cover of the case.
2. On your phone, go to Settings → Bluetooth.
3. In the list of available devices, find AirPods (they should appear as "AirPods [Your name]" or simply "AirPods").
4. Click on them and confirm pairing.

⚠️ Attention: After a reset AirPods all individual settings will be lost, including binding to iCloud (if it was). To use features like Find My AirPods again, you'll need to connect them to iPhone or iPad.

3. Updating AirPods firmware without iPhone

One of the reasons for an unstable connection may be outdated firmware headphones. Apple regularly releases updates for AirPodsthat correct compatibility errors, including with Android. The problem is that you can officially update the firmware only through iPhone or iPad. However, there is a workaround.

How to check the current firmware version:

1. Connect AirPods to any device Apple (ask a friend or visit a store Apple).
2. Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
3. Click on the icon i next to AirPods.
4. Look at the line Version —the firmware number will be indicated there (for example 5A377 or 6A300).

If you do not have access to iPhoneyou can try alternative method:

• 📱 Connect AirPods to your phone and leave them turned on for 1-2 hours. Sometimes the firmware is updated in the background if the headphones are connected to the Internet via the phone.
