Connected via The USB Android smartphone begins to charge, but the computer does not display it in the list of devices and does not provide access to files due to the fact that the cable or port only works in power mode, and the data transfer mode (MTP) is not activated or the drivers are installed incorrectly.
In this article we will analyze all possible reasons, from a banal choice of connection mode to complex conflicts of system files. We will not use general phrases, but will give specific instructions for diagnosing and troubleshooting devices based on Android.
Checking the physical connection and cable
The first thing that needs to be ruled out is hardware problems. The USB cable is the most vulnerable link in the connection chain. Many users are not aware that there are cables designed solely for charging. In such cords there are simply no wires inside that are responsible for data transmission.
Try to replace the current cable with a known good one, preferably original or certified by the manufacturer. If you have another cord at hand, test its operation by transferring files with another device. It is also worth inspecting the connector USB Type-C or Micro-USB for contamination.
Pocket dust and lint often accumulate inside the smartphone port, which are compressed and prevent the contact pads from closing completely. As a result, the phone charges (since the power contacts are wider), but the data contacts do not touch.
⚠️ Attention: To clean the port, use only a dry wooden toothpick or plastic spatula. Metal needles can short-circuit the contacts and damage the motherboard.
If replacing the cable and cleaning the port did not help, try connecting the device to another USB port computer. It is advisable to use connectors located directly on the motherboard (at the back of the system unit), since the front ports of the case often have poor contact or insufficient power.
Use short cables up to 1 meter long. Long cords (more than 2 meters) often cannot provide stable data transmission due to voltage drop and resistance.
Setting the connection mode in Android
Modern versions of the operating system Android by default block data transfer when connecting to an unfamiliar computer for security purposes. The smartphone goes into “Charge Only” mode, and the PC operating system sees the device simply as a source of energy consumption, and not as a storage device.
To fix this, unlock the phone screen immediately after connecting the cable. Pull down the notification shade. You should see a system notification with text like "USB Charging" or "USB Settings." Click on this notification.
The operating mode selection menu will open. You need to switch the checkbox from “Charging only” to “File transfer” (sometimes this mode is called MTP — Media Transfer Protocol). After selecting this item, the computer should make the sound of connecting a new device, and your phone icon will appear in the explorer.
- 🔌 Charging only —the device receives energy, but is hidden from the system.
- 📁 File transfer (MTP) —the main mode for accessing the phone's memory.
- 📷 Photo transfer (PTP) —mode for working with the camera, sometimes helps if MTP does not work.
If the notification does not appear at all, the system may consider the USB port to be debug or blocked. In some shells, for example MIUI or OneUI, additional confirmation of trust in the computer is required in a pop-up window on the smartphone screen.
Installing and updating device drivers
If everything is in order with the cable and phone settings, the problem most likely lies in the drivers on the computer side. The operating system Windows may not have built-in drivers for your specific smartphone model, or they may have been damaged as a result of a system update.
For diagnostics, go to Device Manager. This can be done by right-clicking on the "Start" button and selecting the appropriate item. In the list of equipment, find the section "Portable Devices" or "Other Devices".
If you see a device with a yellow exclamation point or a name like "Android" or "MTP Device" with an error, then the driver is not installed correctly. Right-click on the device and select "Update Driver".
⚠️ Attention: The automatic search for drivers through Windows Update often does not find specific drivers for Chinese brands. It is better to download them from the manufacturer's official website.
Try selecting "Search for drivers on this computer", then "Select a driver from the list of available drivers". Select "MTP USB Device" or "USB Composite Device" from the list. Sometimes selecting the "Standard USB Controller" driver helps.
devmgmt.msc
This command, entered into the Run window (Win+R), will open Device Manager directly. If the drivers are installed, but the phone is not visible, try removing the device from the list (Edit -> Remove device), disconnect the cable and connect it again. The system will try to reinstall the driver again.
Secret method of installing drivers
If standard methods do not help, download the ADB and Fastboot platform. Connect your phone with USB debugging enabled. Launch a command prompt in the ADB folder and enter the adb devices command. If the device is detected, the ADB driver will be installed automatically, which often “pulls up” MTP drivers as well.
Software and antivirus conflicts
Sometimes the connection is blocked at the level of third-party software. Aggressive antivirus or firewall settings may consider an attempt to connect an external drive as a security risk and block access to the file system.
Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software and Windows Firewall. If after this the phone is detected correctly, you need to add the device or synchronization process to the exceptions of the protection settings.
It is also worth checking whether you have installed apps for managing the phone from the manufacturer (for example, Samsung Kies, HiSuite, Mi PC Suite). Sometimes they intercept control of the USB port and do not give it to the standard Windows Explorer. Try closing these apps completely through the task manager.
| app | Purpose | Impact on USB |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Kies / Smart Switch | Samsung backup | Blocks MTP for its protocol |
| HiSuite | Huawei/Honor utility | Requires its own drivers, conflicts with standard ones |
| iTunes | Apple media player | Rarely, but can occupy ports if you have an iPhone |
| 360 Total Security | Antivirus | Often blocks the connection of unknown USB devices |
Another reason may be that the “USB modem” mode is enabled. If Internet sharing via USB is activated in the phone's network settings, the computer will see the phone as a network device and not as a flash drive. Disable this feature in your network and access point settings.
Antiviruses often block not the phone itself, but the explorer.exe process when trying to read the MTP file system. Adding the user's folder to the exceptions may solve the problem.
Activating USB debugging and resetting settings
If standard methods do not work, you can try using developer tools. USB debugging mode (USB Debugging) allows the computer to gain deeper access to the device, which sometimes helps to "wake up" the connection.
To enable this mode, go to Settings -> About phone. Find "Build Number" and quickly click on it 7 times in a row. A notification “You have become a developer” will appear. Now a new section “For Developers” will appear in the settings menu.
Inside this section, find the “USB Debugging” switch and activate it. When connecting to a PC, a request will appear on the phone screen to allow debugging from this computer - be sure to click "Allow".
- 🛠 USB debugging — gives access to logs and system commands.
- 🔄 USB configuration default —allows you to force MTP.
- 🚫 Prohibit new USB connections —make sure this item is turned off.
In the same developer menu, find the item "Default USB configuration" and select "File transfer". This will force the phone to always offer this mode when connected, bypassing the charge-only mode.
⚠️ Warning: Do not leave USB debugging enabled all the time unless you are using it for development. This reduces the safety of the device when connected to public charging stations.
As a last resort, if all else fails, you can reset your phone. However, this is a radical measure. Before that, just try resetting your network settings: Settings -> System -> Reset settings -> Reset Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth settings. This will not delete your personal data, but will update your network stacks.

Hardware faults and repairs
When software methods are exhausted, and the computer still does not see the phone, the likelihood of a hardware failure increases. This may be damage to the power controller, which is responsible for distributing signals inside the port, or oxidation of the contacts on the motherboard.
A common problem is the cable of the charging connector coming off inside the phone case. If you recently dropped the device or exposed it to moisture, the contact could be broken on the data line, while the power line remained working.
It is difficult to check this at home without special equipment. However, you can try to gently move the cable in the connector while the phone is connected. If charging disappears and appears, or if the computer makes a connecting sound for a split second, the problem is definitely in the connector.
In such a situation, the charging connector needs to be replaced at a service center. This is an inexpensive and quick procedure. It is also worth checking the status of the USB ports on the computer itself: the south bridge or USB controller on the PC motherboard may have burned out.
Try connecting the phone to another computer or laptop. If it is detected normally there, then the problem is solely in the settings or ports of your main PC, and not in the phone.
Why does the phone charge, but is not detected as a drive?
The USB connector has several contacts. The power pins (VCC and GND) are positioned to close first and require less connection quality. The data pins (D+ and D-) are deeper or require a tighter seal. Dirt or wear can block them.
Can a virus on your phone block the connection to a PC?
Yes, some types of malware can intercept control of the USB interface or block file system mounting in order to hide their files from the antivirus on the computer.
What to do if the device is displayed as "Unknown" in Device Manager device"?
This means that Windows sees the electrical connection, but cannot identify the device. You need to manually install drivers from the manufacturer's website or try updating the chipset driver of your computer's motherboard.
Does the Android version affect the visibility of the phone?
There is no direct effect, but in new versions of Android (11, 12, 13, 14), security policies have become stricter. By default, access to files is closed, and the user must confirm the connection manually each time, while on older versions this could happen automatically.
Will formatting the phone help solve the problem?
Formatting (resetting to factory settings) will help if the cause is a deep software failure of the system or damage to the system files responsible for the USB protocol. Before doing this, be sure to back up your data via the cloud or a memory card.
