Forgot the password for your home Wi-Fi Rostelecom or want to update it for security, but only have a smartphone at hand Android? No problem! You can change the password on your provider's router directly from your phone - without a computer or calling a technician. In this article we will look at all the methods: from the standard login to the web interface to resetting the settings if access is lost.

It is important to understand that the process depends on the router model (Sagemcom, Sercomm, Huawei etc.), but the general logic is the same. We will look at universal steps that work for 90% of devices issued to Rostelecom subscribers. If your router is older than 2018, some menu items may differ - we will warn you about this in advance.

Let's get started! First of all, check whether your Androidsmartphone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network whose password you need to change. If not, you will have to use Ethernet cable or reset the router to factory settings (more on this at the end of the article).

1. Preparation: what you will need to change your password

Before going into the router settings, make sure you have:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Android smartphone with the current OS version (from Android 8.0 and higher).
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Connecting to the router โ€”via Wi-Fi (if you remember the current password) or via LAN cable (you will need an OTG adapter for your phone).
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Login data to the web interface of the router (default logins/passwords are on the device sticker).
  • ๐Ÿ“ New Wi-Fi password (think of it in advance - weโ€™ll sort out the requirements for it below).

If you have never changed the settings of the router, the standard login information is usually as follows:

Router modelLoginPasswordIP address
Sagemcom [Fast] 5364/5365adminadmin or empty192.168.1.1
Sercomm RV6699useruser192.168.0.1
Huawei HG8245Hrootadmin192.168.100.1
Eltex NTU-RG-1402G-Wadminadmin192.168.1.1

Attention! If the data sticker is erased or lost, try universal combinations: admin/admin, admin/empty or user/user. As a last resort, you will have to reset the router (instructions in section 6).

2. Logging into the router's web interface from an Android phone

To change the Wi-Fi password, you need to go to the router control panel through a browser. Here are the step-by-step guide:

  1. Open on your phone any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet). Enter IP address of the router in the address bar (see table above) and click Go.

  2. The authorization window will appear. Enter login and password (default or your current ones). If the data does not match, check your keyboard layout (the password is case sensitive!).

  3. After successful login, you will see the main page of the web interface. The design may differ, but the sections we need are usually named the same.

Problems logging in? Here are the typical errors and their solutions:

  • ๐Ÿ”„ The page does not open โ†’ Check your Wi-Fi/cable connection. Try another browser or clear the cache (Settings โ†’ Applications โ†’ Browser โ†’ Memory โ†’ Clear cache).
  • ๐Ÿšซ "Incorrect password" โ†’ Make sure you are using the data from the router sticker. If that doesnโ€™t help, reset the device (section 6).
  • โš ๏ธ "Connection is not secure" โ†’ This is normal for local addresses. Click Additional โ†’ Go to website (in Chrome).

The connection to the router has been checked (Wi-Fi/cable)

The browser has been launched with the cache cleared

The IP address, login and password are ready to log in

A new Wi-Fi password has been created (minimum 8 characters)

3. Finding the section with Wi-Fi settings

The interface of routers Rostelecom varies depending on the model, but the menu structure is similar. Here's how to find the necessary settings:

For routers Sagemcom (the most common):

  1. Go to section Network โ†’ Wi-Fi (or Wireless).
  2. Select tab Security (Security).
  3. Find the field Network key (Network Key) or PSK password.

For routers Sercomm:

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Wireless network.
  2. Go to the tab Protection.
  3. The password field may be called WPA Pre-Shared Key.

For Huawei:

  1. Select WLAN โ†’ Basic Settings.
  2. Next WPA PreSharedKey โ€”this is the password.

Important: if your router does not have a "Wi-Fi" section on the main page, look for it in "Additional Settings" or "Advanced Settings". On some models Eltex the path is as follows: Interfaces โ†’ Wireless.

Where to look for settings on old routers (before 2018)?

On devices D-Link or TP-Link, which Rostelecom used to issue, the path may be different:

Advanced Setup โ†’ Wireless โ†’ Security Settings.

If you donโ€™t find it, try entering 192.168.1.1/wireless.asp or 192.168.0.1/wlan.html in the address bar of your browser (does not work on all models).

4. Changing the Wi-Fi password: step by step with pictures

Let's say you found a section with wireless network settings. Now you need:

  1. In the field Network name (SSID) you can leave the current name or change it (optional).

  2. In the field Password/Security key enter new password. Requirements:

    • ๐Ÿ”ข Minimum 8 characters (preferably 12+).
    • ๐Ÿ”ค Use letters of different case, numbers and symbols (!@#$%).
    • ๐Ÿšซ Do not use personal information (dates of birth, names).

  • In the drop-down menu Security type select WPA2-PSK (the most reliable option). If available WPA3 -even better.

  • Click Apply, Save or Save (the button is usually at the bottom of the page).

  • Attention! After saving, the router will reboot and all devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi. You will have to connect again, with a new password. If something goes wrong (for example, you forgot the new password), reset the router with the button Reset (section 6).

Example of filling out the fields for the router Sagemcom Fast 5364:

    Network name (SSID): MyHomeWiFi_5G

    Security type: WPA2-PSK

    Network key (password): 7x!K9@m2$pL1

    ๐Ÿ’ก

Take a photo of the new password on your phone or write it down in a notepad - this will eliminate problems when connecting other devices (TV, laptop, etc.).

    5. Checking the new password and connecting devices

    After changing the password:

    1. Wait for the router to reboot (the indicators on the case should stabilize).
    2. On your phone, turn off and turn on Wi-Fi again.
    3. Choose your network from the list and enter a new password.
    4. If you failed to connect:

      • ๐Ÿ”„ Check that you are entering the password without spaces and in the correct case.
      • ๐Ÿ“ถ Make sure that the router is distributing the network (the Wi-Fi indicator should be green/blue).
      • ๐Ÿ”Œ Reboot the router by turning off the power for 30 seconds.

To connect other devices (laptop, TV, etc.), use the same password. If an authentication error occurs somewhere, check whether the filter is enabled on the router by MAC addresses (disabled in the section Wireless network โ†’ MAC filter).

    ๐Ÿ’ก

After changing the password update it on all devices in the house, otherwise they will not be able to automatically connect to Wi-Fi. This is especially important for โ€œsmartโ€ equipment (speakers, cameras, light bulbs) - they may need to be reconfigured again.

    6. Resetting the router if you forgot the password for the control panel

If you cannot log into the web interface (forgot your login/password or the router is faulty), you will have to do hard reset a reset to factory settings. Attention: after this, all personal settings (including the Wi-Fi password) will be reset!

    Instructions:

    1. Find a small button on the back panel of the router Reset (usually recessed into the case).
    2. Take a paperclip or toothpick, press and hold the button 10-15 seconds.
    3. Release the button when the indicators on the router start flashing randomly.
    4. Wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).

    After reset:

    • ๐Ÿ”ง Connect to the router via Wi-Fi - the network will be named RTK-XXXX or HGXXXX (where XXXX is a unique number).
    • ๐Ÿ”‘ The default password is indicated on the router sticker (or empty).
    • ๐ŸŒ Go to the web interface using a standard IP and configure Wi-Fi again (sections 2-4).

Attention! After the reset, you may need to re-configure the Internet connection (enter your login/password from Rostelecom). This data is usually specified in the contract or can be clarified in the providerโ€™s personal account.

What to do if the Reset button does not work?

If the router does not reset with the button, try:

    1. Turn off the power for 1 minute, then repeat holding Reset.

    2. Use another sharp object (needle, thin nail).

    3. On some models Huawei you need to hold Reset 30+ seconds.

If all else fails, the router may be faulty (contact Rostelecom support).

    7. Frequent errors and their solutions

When changing the Wi-Fi password via phone, users often encounter typical problems. Let's look at the most common ones:

    ErrorCauseSolution
Page 192.168.1.1 does not openIncorrect IP address or connection problemsCheck the IP via Wi-Fi Settings โ†’ Advanced on your phone. Try 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1.
"Wrong password" when logging inFactory data changed or resetDo a reset router (section 6) and use the data from the sticker.
After saving, the password does not changeThe "Apply" button is not pressedScroll down the page and find the button Save/Apply. On some routers, you need to confirm the action in a pop-up window.
Wi-Fi disappears after changing the passwordNetwork distribution is disabledCheck that it is enabled in the settings Wireless Radio (or Enable access point).
The new password does not work when connectingA typo or incorrect caseEnter the password in a text editor (for example, in Notepad), then copy it into the connection field.

If your problem is not from the list, check:

    • ๐Ÿ“ถ Signal quality - the phone may lose connection with the router while saving the settings. Come closer to the device.
    • ๐Ÿ”„ Firmware update - on older routers. (Sagemcom 2804 and similar) there may be bugs. Update the software in the section System โ†’ Update.
    • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ IP address conflict โ€”if you have several routers on the network, disable the extra ones during setup.
Is it possible to change the Wi-Fi password without access to the web interface?

No, it is impossible to change the password without logging into the router control panel. If you have forgotten your login details, your only option is reset the router to factory settings (section 6). After this, you can log in using the standard login/password (indicated on the device sticker).

How to find the current Wi-Fi password if you forgot?

If your Androidphone is already connected to this network, you can view the saved password:

    1. Install a file manager with access to root folders (for example, Root Explorer).
    2. Go to /data/misc/wifi/ and open the file WifiConfigStore.xml.
    3. Find the line <string name="PreSharedKey">...</string> - between tags will be the password.

Attention! This method only works on phones with root access. Without them, you cannot see the password.

Why Internet after changing the password missing?

Most likely, the problem is not in the Wi-Fi password, but in the connection settings to Rostelecom. Check:

    • In the router's web interface, go to the section Internet or WAN.
    • Make sure that the correct user name and password from the provider are indicated (they are in the contract).
    • Check that the connection type is PPPoE (for most tariffs Rostelecom).

If the settings are lost, call support Rostelecom on number 8 800 100 08 00 โ€”they will tell you the current parameters.

Can I change the password through the Rostelecom application?

No, the official application Rostelecom (or Personal account) does not allow you to directly change the Wi-Fi password. It is intended only for:

    • Viewing tariff information.
    • Payments for services.
    • Balance checks.

To change the router settings, you still need to go to its web interface (as described in this article).

How to set a more complex password so as not to be hacked?

Use these rules to create a strong password:

    • ๐Ÿ”ข Length - 12-16 characters (minimum 8).
    • ๐Ÿ”ค Combination uppercase and lowercase letters (for example, K and k).
    • ๐Ÿ“Š Add numbers and symbols (!@#$%).
    • ๐Ÿšซ Avoid words from the dictionary, dates of birth, names.

    Examples of strong passwords:

    • Tr0ub4dour&M4rvol0
    • 7H!nk_AB0ut_T0m0rr0w
    • C0ff33_1n_M0rn!ng$

In order not to forget your password, save it in a password manager (for example, Google Password Manager or KeePass).
