The situation when you bought a new Wi-Fi router, but there is no computer with an Ethernet port at hand, is becoming more and more common, especially among owners of ultrabooks and MacBooks. Fortunately, the operating system Android provides all the necessary tools for a full configuration of network equipment directly from the screen of a mobile device.

The setup process via phone is practically no different from the classic method, with the exception of a few nuances of the interface and management. You will not need to install third-party applications, since all work will be done through the built-in browser. The main thing is to understand the principles of the local network and know the address to enter the control panel. In this article, we will go through each step: from the physical connection to fine-tuning security and the guest network.

First, make sure that your router is plugged in and the power lights are on. If the device is new, it may already have factory Wi-Fi settings, indicated on a sticker on the bottom of the case. If you are configuring a device that was already working, you may need to reset it to factory settings to avoid conflicts between old configurations and new parameters. This is especially true if you have forgotten the administrator password from the previous setup.

Preparation of the smartphone and initial connection

The first step is to establish a connection between your gadget and the router. There are two main ways to do this: over a wireless network or using a cable. The wireless method is convenient if the router is already sending out a signal, even if it is open or with a factory password. Find the name of your model in the list of available networks (for example, TP-Link_5G or ASUS) and connect to it.

If you want the most stable connection or Wi-Fi is disabled on your router for security, use a cable OTG (On-The-Go). This small adapter allows you to connect a standard Ethernet cable (patch cord) to the charging port of your phone. Modern smartphones based on Android 10 and higher usually automatically recognize a wired connection and switch traffic to it, ignoring the mobile data.

An important point: after connecting to the router’s network, the phone may display a warning “Connected, no access to the Internet.” This is a normal situation, since the router is not yet configured to work with the provider. In the address bar you need to enter the IP address of the device. Most often this is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. The exact address, as well as the default login and password, are always indicated on the information sticker on the bottom of the router case.

Some modern manufacturers, such as Xiaomi or Keenetic, use alphabetic domain names instead of digital IP addresses for convenience. For example, you can enter miwifi.com or my.keenetic.netin the browser line. The system itself will redirect you to the authorization page. If the page does not load, check the details of the connected network in the Wi-Fi settings on your phone - the “Gateway” item will be indicated there, which is the desired address.

When you try to log in, the browser may show a warning that the connection is not secure (“Your connection is not secure”). This is because the local network uses self-signed security certificates rather than public ones. It's safe because you're inside your network. Click “Advanced” and select “Go to website (not secure)” to continue.

Additional functions are available for advanced users to increase the comfort of using the network. One of the most useful is the Guest Network. It creates a separate access point with its own password that is isolated from your main local network. In the “Parental Controls” section, you can limit Internet access for certain devices according to a schedule or block visiting unwanted sites. This is configured by the MAC address of the child's device. It's also worth checking your DNS settings. Using public DNS servers, such as those from Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), can speed up the opening of sites and increase the security of surfing if the provider’s servers are slow.

Don't forget to update the router firmware. In the “System Tools” or “Administration” section, find the “Software Update” button. Manufacturers regularly release security vulnerability fixes and stability improvements. It is better to do this immediately after the initial setup, while the network is not under active use.

During the setup process via Android, specific difficulties may arise. One of the common problems is that the phone does not see the router’s web interface. Check if your smartphone has Data Saver mode or VPN enabled, which can redirect requests past the local network. Also make sure that you are connected to the Wi-Fi router and not to the mobile data.

Another common situation is that the router is connected to the provider, but there is no Internet. Check the indicators on the case: if the red globe or WAN icon is on, it means there is a physical connection, but authorization has failed. Double-check your PPPoE login and password. If the WAN indicator does not light up at all, check the integrity of the cable coming from the provider to the router port.

If the router interface on the phone screen is not displayed correctly (buttons overlap each other, the menu does not open), try turning on “PC Version” in the browser. In Chrome, this is done through a three-dot menu where you need to check the box next to “PC Version”. This will force the site to be displayed in full size, like
