The situation when a smartphone stops accessing the Internet via the mobile network is familiar to many users. Often the problem lies not in the lack of funds in the account or poor coverage, but in incorrect settings of the access point.
It is the parameter APN (Access Point Name) that is the key link between your device and the telecom operator's gateway. Without correctly entered data, the phone simply will not know where to send requests for loading web pages or running instant messengers.
In most cases Android it configures these parameters automatically when you first install the SIM card. However, firmware failures, manual changes, or the use of specific tariffs may require user intervention. Let's look in detail at how to restore the network's functionality.
What is an APN and why do you need it?
An access point is a set of settings that identifies the gateway between the cellular network and the global Internet. You can draw an analogy with an address: if the IP address is your home, then APN is the post office through which all your correspondence passes.
Telecom operators use different access point names for different services. For example, one profile is used for regular surfing, and another is used for sending MMS or running corporate services. Selecting the wrong point type may result in the Internet working, but images in messages will not load.
In modern smartphones, this data is stored in the radio module database. When changing operators, the system usually requests a configuration update. If this does not happen, you have to enter the data manually, based on the official specifications of the provider.
Before changing the settings, take a screenshot of the current settings. This will help you quickly return everything to the way it was if the new configuration does not work.
⚠️ Attention: Never delete all access points at once without writing down their names. In case of an error, you will have to look for up-to-date data on the operator’s website or call support.
Preparing to configure the access point
Before delving into the depths of the system menu, you need to make sure that the device is basicly ready. Often the problem is solved by simply rebooting or reconnecting the SIM card, so do not immediately change complex settings.
Make sure that there are funds on your number balance and the data service is activated. Also check if the Mobile Data switch is turned on in the notification shade. Without this step, any manipulations with APN will be meaningless.
If you are using a dual-SIM smartphone, pay attention to which card is selected for data transfer by default. Access point settings are tied to a specific SIM card, and changing the profile for one card will not affect the operation of the second.
- 📱 Check whether the mobile data service is activated in the operator’s personal account.
- 🔄 Reboot the device after installing a new SIM card.
- 📶 Make sure that the status bar displays the 4G, LTE or 5G icon.
- 🔒 Turn off the "Flight" mode if it is accidentally activated.
Step-by-step guide: entering the settings menu
Shell interface Android may differ depending on the manufacturer (Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel), but the search logic remains the same. You will need to find the section responsible for the cellular network parameters.
Go to the main menu and select the item Settings. Next, find the section Connections or Network and Internet. In some firmware, this item may be called More or hidden inside the SIM card menu.
You need find item Mobile networks. This is where the section we need is hidden. Be careful: do not confuse it with the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings, as they are in adjacent menus.
After entering the subsection, select the line Access points (APN). You will see a list of all available profiles. If the list is empty or the active point is marked with a red cross, it means that the configuration is broken or missing.
Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access points (APN)
☑️ Search algorithm settings
⚠️ Attention: On some devices with custom firmware, the path may differ. If you do not find the item in the specified location, use the settings search by entering the query "APN".
Creating and editing an APN profile
If the automatic setup does not work, you will have to create a profile manually. In the access points menu, click on the plus sign or three dots in the corner of the screen and select New access point.
A form with many fields will open. There is no need to be scared: you only need to fill out a few key parameters. The remaining fields can be left empty or with default values, the system itself will substitute the necessary data when saving.
The most important field is Name. Here you can enter any name for convenience, for example, “My Internet”. The second critical field is Access point (APN). Here you need to enter the address of the operator's gateway, which looks like a domain name.
After entering all the data, be sure to click the save menu (three dots → Save). Then return to the general list and activate the created point by clicking on the circle next to it. Without this step, the new profile will not start working.
| Parameter | Value for MTS | Value for Beeline | Value for Tele2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | MTS Internet | Beeline Internet | Tele2 Internet |
| APN | internet.mts.ru | internet.beeline.ru | internet.tele2.ru |
| Username | mts | beeline | (leave blank) |
| Password | mts | beeline | (leave blank) |
| Authentication type | PAP or CHAP | PAP or CHAP | PAP or CHAP |
What to do if the fields are locked?
If you cannot edit the fields (they are gray), you may have device administrator rights or a profile set blocked by the operator. Try creating a new point instead of editing the old one.
Configuring settings for MMS and special services
Regular Internet is not the only function that depends on the access point. To send multimedia messages (MMS), a separate profile or additional parameters are often required.
In the field APN type you need to enter the value default, supl, mms. If you enter only default, the Internet will work, but sending pictures through the standard messaging application may be blocked.
You may also need to specify the address MMSC (multimedia message server). This data is individual for each operator and is usually published in the help section on their official websites. An error in one letter of the address will cause the message to be stuck in the “Sending” status.
Some operators require you to specify a proxy server for MMS. In modern 4G and 5G networks, this requirement is less common, but for older tariff plans it is still relevant. Check the current requirements in the contract or personal account.
⚠️ Attention: The parameters for MMS are case sensitive and the presence of spaces. Enter the data strictly as specified in the operator's official certificate.
After saving the MMS settings, it is recommended to send a test message to yourself or a contact to make sure that the service is working correctly.
For full operation of all communication functions, in the "APN Type" field, you must specify all the necessary protocols, separated by commas without spaces.
Reset settings to factory settings
If manual configuration does not work or you are confused by the many created profiles, the easiest way is to reset. This will return the list of access points to the state that the operator stitched into the database when registering the SIM card.
In the menu Access points (APN) click on the menu (three dots) and select the option Reset settings or Restore default settings. The system will delete all user profiles and load standard ones.
This method is especially effective after updating the operating system Androidwhen old configurations may conflict with new network protocols. After the reset, be sure to restart the phone.
- 🗑️ Will delete all manually created access points.
- ⚙️ Restore the operator's factory settings.
- 🔄 Requires a mandatory reboot of the device.
- ✅ Solves 90% of problems with incorrect Internet.
If the reset does not help, remove the SIM card, wipe the contacts with a soft cloth and insert it back. Sometimes the oxidation of contacts interferes with the reading of profile settings.
Why does the Internet not work even after setting the APN?
There may be several reasons: lack of network coverage in a given area, blocking of the service on the operator’s side due to debt, or incompatibility of the frequencies of your phone with the operator’s towers. Also check if the traffic saving mode is enabled, which blocks background data transfer.
Is it possible to use APN settings from one operator on the SIM card of another?
Technically, you can enter data, but it will not work. The access point is strictly tied to the IMSI code of the SIM card and the tariff. An attempt to use the MTS gateway on a Beeline card will result in an authentication error and lack of access to the network.
How to check which access point is active now?
Go to the menu Access points (APN). The active profile will be highlighted with a green circle or have a filled radio button to the left of the name. If no point is selected, the Internet will not work.
Does the APN setting affect the Internet speed?
The setting itself does not speed up the communication channel, since the speed is limited by the tariff and coverage. However, incorrect settings can cause the phone to connect to a slower gateway or use outdated compression protocols, which will indirectly reduce speed.
Do you need to configure an APN for 5G networks?
Yes, the principle is the same. To work in fifth generation networks, support for specific types of access points is often required (for example, with the 5G mark in the name), but in most cases a standard profile is sufficient defaultif the operator supports NSA or SA technology.
