Smartphones based on Android over time may begin to work slower, produce system errors, or simply require transfer to a new owner. In such situations, the only correct solution is to completely return the device to its original state, which is technically called Hard Reset or reset to factory settings. This procedure clears the device's internal memory of all user data, applications and cache, returning the software to the state it was in when purchased.

Many users are afraid to perform this operation due to the risk of losing important photos, contacts and correspondence. However, if you follow a clear algorithm of actions and first create a backup copy, the process is safe and fast. You must understand that after completing the procedure, the phone will become a “blank slate”, and you will have to go through the initial setup again, log into your Google account and install the necessary apps.

There are several ways to complete this task: through the standard operating system settings menu, using special engineering codes or through recovery mode Recovery Mode. The specific method you choose depends on whether the device has access to the desktop and menus, or whether the system is locked and won't start. Let's take a closer look at each of these options so you can choose the one that best suits your situation.

Preparing your device for a full data reset

Before initiating the wipe process, it is critical to complete a number of preparatory steps. Ignoring this step can lead to irretrievable loss of valuable information, which will subsequently be extremely difficult or impossible to recover. Make sure that your smartphone's battery is charged at least 50-60% so that the device does not turn off at the most critical moment of the firmware.

The first step is to create a reliable backup copy of all data. You can use cloud services such as Google Drive or Google Photos, or save the information to your computer via a USB cable. Pay special attention to the folder DCIMwhere photos and videos are stored, as well as the directory Documents and downloads.

  • 📸 Back up your media content (photos, videos, audio) to external media or to the cloud.
  • 📞 Export contacts to a file .vcf or synchronize them with your Google account.
  • 🔐 Remember or write down the login and password for the main Google account linked to the device.

Particular attention should be paid to the issue of protection against blocking FRP (Factory Reset Protection). This is a security mechanism that requires you to enter your Google account information after the reset. If you forget the password, unlocking your phone will be very difficult, and often requires contacting a service center with a receipt of purchase.

⚠️ Attention: If you plan to sell or give away your phone, be sure to delete your Google account through the settings menu before resetting. Go to Settings → Accounts, select your profile and click “Delete account”. This will prevent the new owner from triggering FRP protection.

Reset through the Android settings menu

This is the simplest and safest method, which is suitable for devices with a working operating system and a working touch screen. The interface may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer's shell (MIUI, OneUI, ColorOS), but the general logic of the menu remains the same for the entire ecosystem.

You need to open the main menu and find the settings section. It is usually indicated by a gear icon. Further, the path may vary: on “pure” Android this is often a section System → Reset settings, and for manufacturers like Samsung or Xiaomi it can be in the categories General settings or Advanced settings.

Find an item called “Reset data”, “Backup and reset” or “Erase all data”. The system will warn you that all files will be deleted. If the device has a PIN code, pattern or unlock password, the system will require you to enter them to confirm the owner's identity.

☑️ Checklist before pressing the reset button

Completed: 0 / 4

After confirming the action, the data deletion process will begin. The screen may go dark, the device will reboot, and you will see the manufacturer's logo or boot animation. This stage may take from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the amount of memory filled and the speed of the drive.

⚠️ Attention: In some shells, for example in older versions of MIUI, after a reset you may need to connect to Wi-Fi to activate the device. Make sure you know the password for your home network.

Using Recovery mode for Hard Reset

The method of using the mode Recovery is necessary in cases where the phone does not boot, is stuck on the logo, is locked with a pattern, or the touch screen does not respond to touches. This is a hardware reset method that works regardless of the state of the operating system.

To get to this menu, you must perform a specific combination of button presses when the device is turned off. The combinations vary between brands: most often this is holding down the volume up button Volume Up and the power button Power. Some Samsung models require a cable to be connected to the computer.

When you see a logo or menu with text in English, release the buttons. Control in this mode is carried out with the volume buttons (up and down), and the choice of item is confirmed with the power button. You need to find the section Wipe data/factory reset.

What to do if the Recovery menu does not appear?

If the standard button combination does not work, try holding down the Volume Down and Power buttons. Some devices (such as Huawei) require you to hold both volume buttons at the same time. Also make sure that the phone is completely turned off and not just rebooted.

After selecting the reset item, the system will ask for confirmation, usually this is item Yes or Factory data reset. Confirm the action. The process will go quickly, since in this mode unnecessary services are not loaded. When finished, select the item Reboot system now to reboot.

Smartphone brand Button combination (with the device turned off) Input features
Samsung Volume Up + Power (or Bixby) For new models, you may need to connect a USB cable to the PC
Xiaomi / Redmi Volume Up + Power Hold until the Mi logo appears, then release the power
Huawei / Honor Volume Up + Power Sometimes you need to hold both volume buttons
Sony Volume Down + Power The indicator vibrates when entering mode
Pixel / Motorola Volume Down + Power First you will get to Bootloader, then select Recovery with the buttons volume

Resetting settings via a computer and ADB

For advanced users, there is a reset method via USB debugging using a computer and utility ADB (Android Debug Bridge). This method is effective if the touch screen is broken, but the system inside is working, and USB debugging was previously enabled in the developer menu.

You will need to install device drivers on your PC and download ADB platform tools. Connect your smartphone with a cable to the computer, open the command line in the folder with the utility and enter a command to check the connection.

adb devices

If the device is displayed in the list, you can send a command to reboot into recovery mode or perform a reset directly. The command for an immediate reset is as follows:

adb shell recovery --wipe_data

Or an alternative option through the service menu:

adb shell am broadcast -a android.intent.action.FACTORY_RESET
💡

Before using ADB, make sure that a window appears on your phone screen asking you to allow debugging from this computer, and you click “Allow”. Without this, the command will not work.

Data recovery after a factory reset

After the phone boots up in a new state, the initial setup process will begin. At this stage, the system will prompt you to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Google account. This is where the process of restoring your data will begin, if you did everything correctly at the preparation stage.

When you log into the same Google account that was used previously, the system will automatically offer to restore the backup. You will see a list of available backups with the date they were created. Select the most recent archive to restore contacts, call history, application settings and SMS.

Photos and videos that were synchronized with Google Photoswill appear in the gallery automatically after connecting to the Internet. Applications will start downloading from Play Market in the background. However, files stored in internal memory outside of system folders (for example, downloads from instant messengers) may not be restored if they were not copied manually.

Typical problems and their solutions

Sometimes after the reset procedure, users encounter unexpected difficulties. One of the most common problems is an endless reboot or “bootloop”, where the phone constantly turns off and on before reaching the desktop. This may indicate damage to system files or an unsuccessful attempt to update the software before resetting.

In this case, you may need to flash the device using a computer and special utilities like Odin for Samsung or Fastboot for other models. Also a common problem is the requirement to enter the old Google account, which we mentioned in the section about FRP.

If the phone says “Device reset” and asks for a password for an account that you don’t remember, the only legal ways to unlock it are to restore access to mail through the Google website or provide a receipt for the purchase to an authorized service center. Bypassing FRP protection using third-party methods often violates the warranty and may be unsafe.

⚠️ Warning: Do not try to unlock FRP using paid apps from the Internet if you are not sure of their reliability. Many of them contain viruses or require advance payment without a guarantee of results.

💡

The most common reason for a failed reset is an interruption of the process due to a dead battery. Always connect your phone to a charger before starting the Hard Reset procedure.

Will a factory reset remove the virus or malware?

Yes, in most cases, a full factory reset will remove viruses as they are in the user partition of memory, which is completely cleared. However, if the malware has penetrated deep into the system (becomes a system application), a simple reset may not help, and a flashing will be required.

Is it possible to reset a phone if it is locked by the operator?

Resetting the settings does not remove the operator lock (Network Lock). The phone will be cleared of data, but when inserting a SIM card from another operator, it will still request an unlock code. To remove such a lock, you need to contact the operator.

How long does the reset process take?

Usually the process takes from 5 to 20 minutes. The time depends on the amount of internal memory, the number of files that need to be erased, and the speed of the device’s processor. Do not interrupt the process, even if the screen does not light up for a long time.

Do you need to remove the SIM card and memory card before resetting?

You don’t have to remove the SIM card, it will not be damaged. However, it is better to remove the microSD memory card so as not to accidentally format it along with the internal memory if you select the wrong option in the reset menu.

Will the warranty be returned after resetting the settings?

Resetting the settings itself does not void the warranty, since this is a standard feature of the device. However, if you have gained superuser rights (Root) and violated the integrity of the system partition, the warranty may be lost, and a reset will not fix this.
